Learning to roll an OC1--tips please

Some of those are super close!! Make sure your paddle and torso are perpendicular to the boat. Also make sure you have your paddle in a low brace rather than a high brace.

The attempt from 0:31 to 0:33 is a really clear example of where you need your head to follow your body toward the bottom of the river (lake in this case). The attempt looks beautiful as it starts - the boat is rotating, your body is staying supple and slinking toward the water. Then your head appears, still curled toward the surface of the water. If you would have relaxed your neck once you started the roll motion, I'm pretty sure you would have come up just fine.

If the shoulders stayed square to the surface and the face in the water, bingo!, easy roll. Compare to the earlier photo of a good roll.

Once you start looking towards the bow of your boat, your body is against you instead of for you.

Yes, great still shot! Maybe it would help to mentally picture trying to keep your offside shoulder in the water as long as possible - this will keep your shoulders squared to the surface of the water, and as a result, will keep your head in the water longer.

Awesome advice already posted but I just wanted to re-emphasize what one other poster said.

When you feel your paddle diving it means you've accidentally slipping into a high brace as opposed to a low brace.

Really understanding the low brace was the tipping point for me learning to roll a C-1. The Kayak roll is kinda an ugly high brace over the back deck. That's why you shouldn't even watch guys rolling kayaks. It's a very different process.

The basic onside C-1 roll is a pure low brace. Try practicing your low brace, going lower and lower, until your completely underwater. That motion is the kicker for the C-1 Roll.

Last but not least... I like to think of a beaver flapping it's tail on top of the water. That's the ultimate low brace. It makes that kaaaaawump... sound...
