River of the Year - Stoney Creek River

Post by FullGnarlzOC »

The canoes were out in full force all weekend at the 'River of the Year' fest. It was perhaps the first fest I've been to (other than ALF) where canoes held more of a presence than our kayaking brethren. The video doesn't really show the whole picture - but you get the idea...

I made two edits - one w/ Neil Diamond, and the other - a techno version of the same song. Shots are a little random due to not getting enough footage - but it turn out ok

When I saw Neil Diamond... thought it was going to be lame. Nicely done! Sorry I missed SCR.

Nicely done Tommy!!!

I wish that I could have been with you guys on Sunday. It looks like you had a great day on the river.

I can attest that there was a real canoe presence on Stoneycreek to celebrate the River of the Year.

Thanks for posting this.

I was wondering about the roll. I guess that I need to get some more swimming lessons from Tommy and Al (how to swim more often that is) 8)

Tommy, how did Rand the c1er like the Ion he was in?

I need my hull speed, so the Ion was not a hit with me. However, I loved the Option right off, great boat. It was very cool to get the opportunity to test drive some current ob designs, thanks guys. I think Mark liked the Fink.

Is/are the video/photos typical of thew whole run? Do sections of harder, or flatter water abound? Long drive for me, but from what I see, things look good.

Mad Mike,

AW says 3-4 but IMHO it's a Class 2-3 run at normal level with many ledges and play spots and has some interesting tributaries when levels are right. Best to try out when there's a release, or natural flow when about 750 cfs (3 ft+) and up.

To add to what Al said, a lot if the video was shot on one of the more continuous play sections of Stoneycreek river. There are a lot of play waves on this run and very little flat water.

From the AW Press Release:
The recent Stonycreek Rendezvous was the kick-off for the first year of scheduled releases from Quemahoning Reservoir, with 11 scheduled releases remaining in 2012. These 500cfs releases will reach the Foustwell Bridge put-in between 10 am and 2 pm, adding to the natural flow to make the river runnable. Releases are dependent on having sufficient water in the Quemahoning Reservoir. On the Wednesday prior to a release, water levels at the dam will be assessed and the Benscreek Canoe Club website will announce/confirm the release. Check http://benscreekcanoeclub.com/quemahoning-releases/ for the latest information.
