strange Mohawk

Coming home tonight I saw a white Mohawk whitewater boat on a truck in a parking lot of our local health food store. I couldn't tell if it was an XL or not - soft edges, certainly not a Viper, wrong ends for a Rodeo, didn't look like a Probe either. 12' long? On closer inspection I found it was made of fiberglass - not kevlar and not a cloth layup. Well, maybe my terminology isn't right but it looked like what I think I've heard called "woven roving" with a "mat" (not quite chopper gun) in the middle. There were ribs under the Perception saddle in the middle. It looked like it was contstructed just like their flatwater fiberglass boats.

The owner came out and I struck up a conversation - he said he bought it from some guy who moved here (SC) from out west. He'd been paddling "big water" out there but didn't want to paddle it here and sold it to this guy for $350. He thought it was 10 years or so old, but the last three of the serial number were "505" which I read to be May 2005. He's a novice at white water and says the boat is very tippy which doesn't sound like an XL...

I'll try to get the pix I took off the camera and post them. A prototype of some sort? Rich?

The last two digits of the Hull ID number are the model year. The number before those is the last digit in year it was produced. so "505" would be a model year 2005, built in 2005. The 4th from last character is a letter- that's the month it was produced- A is January, B is Feb, C is March, etc. Using a number for month wouldn't work, since there are 12 months. This is all US Coast Guard regulation, so it should go for all boats- as long as the manufacturers are doing things properly.

Rodeo clown is kinda right THe serial numberhould read like that except in non production boats. I have wondered what happened to this boat happy to hear it is around. Sometimes protos are made and not tagged, then at a later date it is tagged by who ever ended up with it (so sale or wht ever). dont know much about it only have seen drawings of your guees is as good as mine.

Nope. Vinyl gunwales, not wood. Not that sharp of an entry (blunter than a Viper).

Nope. It sez Mohawk on the side - not Clipper and definitely not a nice kevlar layup like a Clipper (seen one once).

I'm hoping the guy takes me up on my offer to paddle with us and I get another look at it (and some better pictures...).

Didn't Dale Johnson (sp?) paddle a white Mohawk in one of the old paddle porn's? As a matter of fact I think Mark Cumknock (Walden's Ridge) had something to do with that???

Man... that jus' sounds terribly dirty after googling now... doesn't it?

Yeah, a Rodeo, wasn't it? That's what he was paddling in the Gorilla pic used in the Mohawk ad.

While you are learning about the white mohawk, you should check out "boof" at the same time.
