Re: Rolling in Holes

Now I have myself oriented and tucked and feel much more comfortable under there but the paddle is getting thrashed around. Tomorrow night I'll get out and try to initiate the roll and not worry so much about the paddle, see if that works. I have so much respect for folks that have the spatial awar...

Re: Rolling in Holes

Sam, look again. There are no on-side rolls in the video clip posted. A strong hip snap is key to the offside rolls at 15 seconds and 46 seconds. At 50 seconds, the roll fails because a large amount of water moving upstream is interfering with the downstream gunwale - look at the strength of the edd...

"So according to the map, we're almost to the takeout. When we get there, we hike our boat up to the highway, and paddle up the road to...wait a second... Dammit!"

Re: off-side side-surf?

You are on the right track. Brace off the incoming green water with your torso rotated upstream, your paddle shaft parallel to the gunwale, and your paddle blade vertical. The idea is to dip the bottom part of the blade without catching an edge on the incoming water. It takes some getting used to, b...

Re: Portaging...

The advice about visualizing resonated with me - if you can visualize yourself making the moves, then consider running. If you can't visualize the line and the strokes needed to get on it, then you really ought to walk. Swims and screw-ups are a big part of learning, and a smaller part of continuing...

Re: Ladies drysuit advice

Unless she is already a seasoned outdoorswoman, tougher than most, and truly motivated to progress in paddlesports, and pretty coordinated on top of all that, then I would stay far away from the front zipper/funnel combo. I know it's difficult to shell out for a top-of-the-line drysuit for a novice ...

Re: PFD Reccomendations

My wife just spent my REI dividend on a Maximus Prime. It is the only rescue PFD that will fit a truly small-framed person securely, and first vest that I really like since the Lotus P-Vest. My P-Vest just ticked over 10 years, and though it is still intact, it is time to replace it. I do not care f...

Re: Curved blade versus flat blade

I have gone full circle on blade design. A year ago, my favorite blade of all time was the Galasport 3m, followed by Viking, and then the Mitchell curved Premier. All three are nearly identical at the catch, but the Galasport's back face behaved better during more complex strokes and in-water recove...

Re: Boat of the Week - Hahn

Overheard on Tohickon Creek, squinting upstream: "That C1 looks like a Hahn, but it's just too small to be one. Wait...that's Charlie Walbridge. He just makes a Hahn look that small." DC locals still see Ed Gertler paddling a PS Composites Hahn, and one other gentleman whose name escapes me has a st...
