Re: What are you nifty water bottle carrier setups for a small solo canoe with bulkhead?
For my c1's with bulkheads I put a bungee cord through the bulkhead. Put a fender washer against the front of the bulkhead, then tie your knot. Mine are set up to hold a 32oz. Gatorade bottle. https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1 ... 9569768609

WTB. Old Town Scout. It's time to replace my Scout. I'm in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Close would be good.

Re: New Prototype boat from Shaggy Designs
This is great news! I still love my Sith, but it would be neat to have a fast Shaggy.

Stick with it. Tippy boats can be pretty frustrating till you get the hang of then, but once you're there you'll have a blast. They'll also help your roll.

Glad you had good water. Hate I missed it. I've got to paddle more this year.

Re: Cascade question
Is been a while, but 3" seems about right for thickness. Taller than stock will help keep you in the straps better when you roll.

Re: Mohawk Maxim trash?
Ditto on PAC's thoughts. I was only in one for a few minutes a long time ago. It requires more skill than your Probe. Folks who want to just cruise the river will probably not enjoy this boat. I only had a small wave to try it on. I thought it was responsive and would like to try one on a bigger fea...

Re: looking for a new boat
I was lucky enough to catch Bob headed South one Thanksgiving many years ago. He met me at my local river for a demo. I think it's essentially a narrowed cascade. It's faster and way more responsive than the cascade. Probably a little less stable. You'll love the light weight both on and off the wat...

Re: surfc1
Like Adam, I like my Viper for the ocean. Tough part is getting out through the breakers. Once you're on a wave, keep the bow up, particularly if you're surfing the shore break. If you pearl, you'll probably ender, unless you tilt way over to shed the water quickly. I have planted the bow of a Casca...

Re: Boat Loading Systems
GM trucks are jacked up in the back from the factory. I put 2" drop shackles on the back to level the truck. That puts the rear cross bar at 6'6". Prior to doing shackles I thought about a step stool. For boats that aren't heavy (40 lbs. Or less) even up to 18' 6", I load from the side by myself. 8'...

Re: Viper (Frachella) C1 vs. River Elf
I have a couple of Vipers. I once did a lunch break in a River Elf. The Viper is my go to big water boat. It's fast, forgiving, surfs well in the river and ocean and gives nice, smooth stern squirts. The River Elf is faster than it looks, very light and very responsive. It surfs short, steep waves m...

Re: "best" tripping boats?
Whatever you get, I recommend sliding tractor seats for trimming the boat & comfort. milkman, Dr John & Old_Guy have recommended the Old Town Appalachian. I have the heavier crosslink version, the Scout. At 78lbs, it's not a lightweight, but it is tougher than the Royalex Appalachian. I don't do ove...

Re: Convertions - what's the state of the art?
I really like a bullhead and lap belt. Just know that it'll take longer to get out if you swim. I like a cam lock buckle. I set them up so o can hold my paddle with my shift hand, then pull the skirt and pull the buckle towards my grip hand side.

Re: Open canoe roll revised technique
I thought everyone rolled like that. Except for the whole wait till your paddle is at the surface, then flip it part. It still amazes me how many folks wait to flip the paddle. Oh well, if it works for you, don't fix it.
