The Big Bang Theory of Canoes

My buddy Dave went to Vegas. Said he saw this and thought of me.
Man that's a lot of beer cans!

The signal to noise ratio has improved dramaticaly.

When Louie talks boats and paddling, he's as good as anybody here.
When he talks trash... hey if I wanted a soap opera I'd read CNN.

What if I just want to upload a photo from my desktop? That is what I am trying to do...there has to be an easier way :( I don't think you can do that. I believe the photo has to be hosted somewhere else. I use Picasa http://picasa.google.com/features.html#utm_medium=embed&utm_source=pwalogin http:...

So how many of you are calling it a backferry when your boat is pointed upstream and you are paddling backwards faster than the current? I just call that paddling backwards. To me a backferry is when the boat is pointed downstream and I'm paddling backwards to go significantly slower than the curren...

If you are wearing a wet suit you may find it cold in a breeze once it gets wet. A dry top or splash jacket and wind or rain pants will help with that. In October and November in New England I might be in my shorts, my wet suit, or my dry suit depending on the air temperature. From December through ...

I spent most of my time in a vinyl gunneled Outrage with narrow ends. Then I briefly owned a wood gunneled Outrage with flaired ends. Tom Foster said the flair makes it dryer so it must be true. But I can swamp anything. I wouldn't say there's a huge difference. I prefer the narrow ends. Feels faste...

Personaly I think the Outrage is the greatest OC1 ever. But I've seen enough issues with bad, bubbled and delaminating, as well as the industry wide soft royalex since Confluence took over that I am leary of buying a new Mad River hull. Thier IQ gunnels are pretty awful too. As far as folks not talk...

If you want to stay mostly out of the water you might consider getting something like a Wildfire/Starfire/Merlin II/Perigrine and learning quiet water Freestyle. http://ww.freestylecanoeing.com/ Some folks, myself included, find the performance aspect a bit goofy. But the techniques cross over to wh...

What boats have you paddled? The Atom is a great river runner with a slalom boat heritage. So long as you don't let the current catch up behind you it's as mild mannered as they come. It ain't a boat that likes a back ferry though. Paddle aggressively and point upstream if you want to slow down. Tha...

I don't know about the fit but I've paddled my Encore with about 60 lbs of camping gear + my 190 lbs and thought it handled pretty well.
That's only 30 lbs shy of your combines 280 lbs.
You'd probably need to experiment with the trim but I can't think why symetry would be an issue otherwise.

Yeah that's what my boat needs, more holes! But on the subject of sketchy ideas for getting the water out I've often wondered if a venturi bailer such as they use in sailboats and marathon canoes would be of any use? You might need to surf a wave to get enough water under the boat speed. The lack of...

Jim Kelly Rand always seems to be looking for a tandem partner. http://inlinethumb19.webshots.com/5714/2969593680075003331S600x600Q85.jpg That was October of 08. Last time I tandemed in moving water. I'm paddling stern because I have about 20 lbs on Jim. I prefer bow. Nah. I prefer being the only on...

Joe, have you tried the Dagger Dimension?
BIG boat.
Surprisingly responsive.
I believe the NHAMC has at least one so trying it out should be easy for you.
Sadly they are no longer made but you do see them for sale used from time to time.

Take this as it is, coming from a 190 lb boater with modest skills at best. I paddle a Cascade and an Atom as well as an Outrage and Encore OC1s. The Atom is as fast as the Outrage where the Cascade is slower and does not attain as easily. The Atom has edges (compared to the Cascade) for more precis...
