There were more cboaters because for years that was all that was available. Whitewater boating was only canoes (first wood canvas, then aluminum) until kayaks first started appearing in the 50s and 60s. Whitewater canoeing as we know it today used to be more prevalent in the 80s and 90s if only beca...

bobthepainter - That's a great point. This summer I had front row tickets as one of the kayakers in my paddling group dropped the training blade and started canoeing. So plus one for the sport. Unfortunately, a lot of the instructional clubs and groups only focus on kayaking, because it is easier to...

I think the more boats look like a canoe, the better off it will be for the sport. At the end of the day, kayaks will always be cheaper, lighter, and easier to learn initially, three considerations which are tough to beat. However, if we just get out there on the river and have fun, and talk about h...

I'll put a call into Dave this weekend. There had been rumors of him retiring. The good news is, Charlie Wilson has some/all of the original Curtis molds, which imho were slightly better than the hemlock boats.

I used shore adhesive to glue my saddle together, but I can't speak to its effectiveness adhering minicell to vinyl. Just be careful when you use it, it is nasty stuff. Even with a respirator, after twenty minutes working with this stuff, I started having all sorts of crazy hallucinations about beco...

If I had to choose only one boat, I'd want something I could do everything in well, not one or two things great. I'd take an OT Appalachian or a nova craft prospector. Solo or tandem, whitewater or flats, tripping or class iv play. Something all round would allow me to do more

I am jumping through hoops right now, trying to get a whitewater club organized at uni. They rejected the first application on accounts of it being a dangerous activity that they couldn't properly insure. No argument from me. So then I reapplied for a whitewater "appreciation" club. The idea being, ...

For me its more about risk management. I know what risks I'm willing to take. Scouting is mostly evaluating the risks in regards to what I am willing to do. The fear is still there, especially if its my first time doing something. Tony will attest to the fact that I was puckerin' pretty good the fir...

Thompson's Waterseal. Match the stain. I use Nutmeg Brown, but the wood gunwales are pretty dark.

I've been in a boat before I could walk, and probably talk. The first canoe trips I remember were paddling with my dad, fishing golf balls out of the Bantam River in Litchfield, CT.

First whitewater was years later. I remember looking down the Class I thinking, holy moses, i have to get down that?

Cutting a Mohawk Saddle in Half?

I have to outfit a boat from scratch, and was thinking about taking the front half of the Mohawk Saddle from my old Probe to use as the saddle for the new boat. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, how hard was it and did you run into any snags? I was thinking I would chop the saddle while it's ...

I have one of those old Norse guide sticks. It's cool because, if I ever wrap my boat, I can use the paddle to chop down trees and carve me another one.
