Prowler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Martin: I cannot speak to the Caption, but I highly recommend the Prowler. I have both the Prowler (composite) and the Howler (plastic) and they get paddled a lot, both tandem and solo. The Howler is edgier and handles well. I do not like it as much when the combined padders’ weight starts getting a...

Duh

I have had it happen twice. The funny time was when I took a neighbor for a tandem run in my Howler (OC). At one rapid we spun into an eddy so fast that he was tossed sideways. He grabbed the gunnels and pulled us over. I rolled right up, and by the time his head popped up I was upright, laughing an...

Different

I agree with the posts about the differences in the OC and C1 rolls. The first few years that I was switching between the 2 boats I would get really confused because the timing was different. I got to the point that I was missing OC rolls, and they had been solid (like you, I learned those first). T...

Warning

Just a warning about bringing the boat in and cranking up the heat. No, it is not the fumes I am worried about. Something much more explosive. . . . If you have a spouse / significant other, and you are trying to save $$$ (for your next boat) by keeping the thermostat down. . . you do not want to be...

Yup

Yes. I took Ken's advice earlier in the year and sent a paddle to Mitchell (at the address on the web site). They called me to tell me it was received and confirmed the work. They replaced the tip, and if I recall correctly that was cheaper than the shipping out to them. Great company!

Good question

A couple of weeks ago I was paddling in the back yard of a friend of mine and he came down to watch. He is a forensic anthropologist and his first question, after seeing me in a boat, was about getting deep vein thromboses. I told him that I have never heard of a paddler getting one. So now I am cur...

Knees rotate

What is the position of your feet/ankles? I used to get this pain when I used toe blocks. With the toe blocks my tibia rotated laterally (externally) and stressed my medial (inner) knee ligaments. Yes- the knee is not a straight hinge, there is some rotation that occurs there. When I point my feet d...

Train

Pat has got that 6-pack down pat! I just wanna know what kind of 6-pack it is? PBR? To add to what he said. Go out a do a couple thousand crossover strokes on flat water over the next couple of weeks. It is so un-natural that it takes a LONG time to learn the movement so that you can use your full b...

Race time

Great thread. My favorite paddling is OC recreational. I did that from 1988 – about 2001 and I avoided races because I hated being a spectator. Now I am a race addict, even thought my favorite paddling is still recreational. The reasons: 1. Racing has made me a MUCH better paddler. Back in my float ...

Results

Yeah, they will not post results until they are done paddlin' and partying, so start looking next week. I am jealous. After planning to go for many months I got tied up with some family problems and I am missing it, so I am looking forward to the results to see what I missed. Good luck to all the ra...

Wow

ABird taking flight. Amazing.

I cannot imagine having the composure (aka balls) to do the crossover right there.

Great stuff!

Race

Connie and others have volunteered a HUGE amount of time into putting this race together. I hope that it can go off as planned and I am looking forward to it. It will be very disappointing if it ends up being cancelled or moved. However, I am grateful to Connie and the other leaders that are working...

Shaft diameter

Good recommendations! Another consideration may be a smaller paddle shaft. A larger paddle shaft actually allows you to generate more force when you grip it, so smaller may be better. The real trick is to have a relaxed grip on the shaft. A death grip on the paddle puts a lot of strain on the muscle...

More is better

I disagree that “Less popular activities = more preserved streams”. I think that the risk is that rivers can be dammed, diverted, or the access points can lost. The solutions, as the AWA has repeatedly shown us, have ranged from negotiation to political action, and the successes come based on the co...
