OR show.....?

They may have been at the Outdoor Retailer show in Utah. Biggest paddling show of the year so most folks would be there. That should be over by now though....give another try.

Cheap, but good helmets....

Hey all... I was just up in Ottawa and Bushtukah is clearing out hteir remaining helmet stock for 50% off. They have some Cascades (full cut and reduced cut - still good protection from that one) and a few Shred Ready Vixens. Some Protecs too, but not a model I think is worth having. The cascade hel...

Cutting foam

Gudday everyone. Looking for some help with cutting foam. I know about 6" wall-board saws, craft knives (good for <1" thick stuff) and some other general stuff, but I was wondering if comeone could tell me how to smoothly and cleanly cut large pieces (e.g. saddles). How do the outfitting manufacture...

Hudson Thoughts

Yep, 17miles (30km) is a long day, as Kalin pointed out, but there really aren't (to my knowledge) any alternative put ins. It's a wilderness run where at most stages you are several miles from the nearest road. That's why it's important to be confident you are ready for the run before putting on......

Hudson Armada

I'm in :) and I'd guess that Jo will come too. What's the level likely to be like? I'll paddle both days, but Jo would probably prefer the raft option for the Gorge.

Helmets

It seems from the article in the FAQ that everyone is steering away from plastic helmets to composite ones....I've noticed it on the river but basically assumed it was more because of fashion than function. Maybe not? I admit there are many poor plastic helmets on the market, but are they all bad? I...

Why not? Too many shallow rivers

I agree with the previous comments about why not to use it.... too many shallow rivers. It's fine if you paddle predominantly nice big deep rivers, but in NY this doesn't seem to describe that many of the places we paddle. I'd hate to get into the habit and then get myself trashed - I predominantly ...

Double equalizing straps...

Hi I was also having problems with my thighs working loose. I added a seatbelt to keep msyelf on the seat for rolling, but wasn't really happy with that as it takes ~5secs extra to wet exit by the time I find the buckle and release it. Don't like that idea for running hard stuff, but I also don't li...

Aluminium backed hip pads

Hi Guys I've used a frame of 2" wide, 1/8" thick aluminium strips to mount my pedastal and have also used uprights and a semi-circular piece to make a hip-hugger/back band. It works OK, but I've found the 1'8" thick aluminium isn't really strong enough - it tends to bend out of the shape I bent it t...

Anchoring Strips

Hi Ric Yep...those were what I was going to use to anchor the straps holding the saddle. I look at a couple of boats outitting this way at the Wausau slalom and decided there was still too much movement in the saddle if just straps were used to anchor it, so I'll use the velcro as well to minimise t...

Hmmm..

Hi Jim I'm not completely following where the velcro straps go in this. Do they run vertically loop around the saddle and hold the top to the bottom? I've seen some setups that sound similar to what you describe where the bottom of the saddle is actally a foam track about three inches high with a sl...

Velcro

Gudday folks I've been thinking about trying to put together an adjustable saddle system for an open canoe. I've seen some interesting systems involving either velcro or straps for securing the pedastals, but neither seems ideal...the straps don't hold the pedatsals quite secure enough for my liking...

just a warning

Hi Guys Please be careful messing around with whirlpools and seams outside your boat. One of the female competitors was doing that (without pfd too) at the World Rodeo Champs in NZ and drowned (I don't recall more details). She was a squirt boater I believe too, so should have had a pretty good idea...
