Couple of points -- I agree that "dude in the back" is "traditional"; "traditional" comes from a time when men led, women obeyed, and men were assumed to be strong, women weak, and and women only got to be taken out in canoes on lakes, where the stern-man (pun, pun!) controlled the boat. But that's ...

Tandem partners

As an occasional OC-2 instructor, I always brought up one point during a break: Are both of you in the boat because YOU want to be, or is one of you there because you want to please the other person? The latter is not necessarily fatal, but it should be understood and honored by both. Paddling a boa...

Too old for WHAT???

I can't think of anything I'm too old for.
Well, maybe winter climbing with a 60# pack.
Or -- carrying around a plastic kayak...... ;-)

Question: kneeling after knee replacement

I've talked with several orthopedists about this and the only answer I get is they all recite that "About X-percent of patients cannot kneel without pain after knee replacement". Period, that's it, it's like putting a nickel in a slot and it plays the same answer every time. It appears to me that th...

Wow -- thanks for the quick replies!! (Post before bed -- read replies at breakfast!!) I think I'll be going with careful inflation for now -- but still thinking about modifying the rack mounts -- I bought the hatch in part because it has a long flat roof, but the mount points are fixed over the doo...

OC-1 Cartopping question from OC newbie

OK this is a silly Q, but I'm accustomed to decked C-1s. Is is preferred to cartop on the highway with float bags in place or removed? I've been told leaving them in will shred them in short order, and that taking them out with kill mpg & make the boat more vulnerable to shifting & bobbing from wind...

WHERE ARE ALL THE C-1W's??????????

Come on, this is such a sexist question. WE EXIST, TOO. but I'm just guessing most of us don't need to hide & wave scarfs and make up little story lines. We are HERE, we count, we boat, our boats & our boating needs count. Yes, some of us even have SO's who "don't boat". They got over it. We respect...

Boat alone??

Yes, I boat alone. Alway have, probably will. A lot of it is on stretches where mostly there will be others, altho not necessarily in cold weather. Not too many others close by want to boat the way I boat, so even if I would start with them, most likely we would split. I'm well aware of the issues. ...

Toe exostosis ; "Twelve toes"

We used to be quite proud of them because it proved you spent a lot of time training in your boat. The C-1 exostosis on top of the big toe joint was referred to as "Twelve-toes"; being called "Twelve-toes" meant everyone knew you were truly hard-core. The ear exostosis is supposed to be caused by lo...

Part of the problem.

As Oopsiflipped says, "sarcasm" (or better yet, "tone of voice") doesn't come across well in posts Maybe the solution is that we need a special "smiley" for "dry/humor/mild sarcasm" ! And OT, thanks Adam for the time it takes to provide this forum. Not to mention your wife, who forever elicits insta...

A single-blader is a canoeist!!!!!

If you paddle with a single blade, you are a canoeist, period. Anyone in a boat for the first time can at least go someplace in a kayak. Going anywhere with a single blade requires at least a minimum of technical skill. Any canoeist can get in a kayak & paddle, even tho it may not always be pretty. ...

First my thanks to Phreon for undertaking this epic project. If ever you had had any idea what you were getting into!!! Who knew?? I thoroughly enjoyed -- it was like being back at a CCA meeting in the first years I was discovering paddling. But I have to say, with due appreciation of the early post...
