k1, too
I've been doing a bit more of it, and for me it has some great benefits. I especially like doing long, shallow water attainments in a section of the Truckee river that is beautiful, goes for miles, but just seems to break c-1 paddles. I've heard that the great Martikan paddles k-1 almost as well as ...

Fantail
The photos look almost identical to what's hanging in my garage- A classic "square" Gala slalom paddle and a a curved "triangular" Gala wildwater blade that appears almost identical in shape and dimension to the Bailey fantail (which is sweet!). Why the difference- in slalom, the paddler is going al...

Beaver fever
You have my deepest sympathy. So there I was, on the South Fork American, in my Groove squirt boat, waiting for the flow to come up. The water was pretty stagnant, there were ALOT of birds flying, and crapping overhead. While squirt/flopping around, I swallowed a big mouthful of water, and actually ...

rolls
As long as we're throwing out rolls, Mike Baker (2009 C-2 wildwater National Champ - stern left) shows off some impressive skills. Cross bow and switch rolls (so left and right partners can roll together), plus hand rolls to both sides. Makes me realize I need to practice more...edg http://www.youtu...

Assuming wildwater means decked boats, paddled in the kneeling position through class 3-4 whitewater, in the canoe classes (c-1 and C-2) straight shafts with curved blades are most prevalent. However, there are exceptions. Almost all of the Germans use bent shafts, similar to slalom, not flatwater, ...

I'm assuming you checked out this older post (not my boat)...edg For Sale - Wildwater C2 Beguin C2 by Midi-Bip in very good condition. Located in Roanoke VA but can get to Charlottesville VA area easily (where my brother is). Midi-Bip was a high end French wildwater manufacturer until they got out o...

Plasic Martikan
Courtesy of Chris Hipgrave, former USACK High Performance Director, a bit more information, at least about the material. I agree, this could be a pretty cost effective way to get a modern shape- this coming from a guy whose "race" boats are a Andy Bridge/Valley Mill built wildwater boat and an (ab)u...

Flatwater Drills
I was shown this years ago, and it still challenges the heck out of me. Slalom derived, but probably quite useful for all types of normal c-1. The pool may or may not be big enough. The object is to develop edge control and balanvce, on-side and offside, with your hips/trunk, and NO weight on the pa...

slight thread drift
Slight thread drift, but the best copy/redesign story I've heard involved a wildwater k-1 that was allegedly derived from the hot French design of the day, the "Obsession". The manufacturer called the modified version, which had an altered deck, the "Suspicion"....edg

Cut down k-1 Paddle
I've seen this done by a c-2 team with a high end slalom Lettman bent shaft k-1 paddle. http://www.downriver.de/Fotoseite/Rainer%20Wiese%20WM04/pages/IMG_3197.htm I've never seen it with a c-1, and think that John C. summed up the potential disadvantages pretty well. Now, if you want really strange,...

Ze Franch, he like to wrap hees hahnd around a beeg karbon grip. http://homepage.mac.com/robertpa28/Sites/zedpat/galeries/2008/chalaux06/chalaux_c1/Pages/48.html I switched to carbon after I broke the softwood grips on both Mitchell and Gala paddles. Wood does feel nice, though, especially in the co...
