Sorry Mikey, I think the name has stuck

I think the name is fairly well set in stone at this point. STINKEYE is distinctive, memorable, slightly self deprecating and a lot of fun. I know that Mike has wanted a cooler name for the design but there are tones of designs out there with cool names and it is hard to keep all of them straight, S...

There was quite a lot of kayaker interest in the Stinkeyes on the LY this weekend, maybe it's just a canoe that they can relate to in terms of size. As much as Al's Monkey Eye looks like a UFO on the river, it looks even more like one on the roof of his SUV. I am looking for the footage of it in the...

I would secound the suggestion to look at some of the more traditional tandems. Many of the classic tandem designs were made for exactly the type of laden expedition tripping in up to class III water that you are talking about. The larger boats are more stable for having kids in and you can haul a l...

I think that mike has addressed most of the "what kind of boat is that" and where did the design come from questions. Mike has been great to send me the forms and help me through this process. I have never built a boat, layed glass or most of the other things that were required to pull this off. I w...

Thanks all for the compliments. I think it is a cool looking boat too. My seat height is 8.75". But, I do have thick knee pads and 1/2" of foam on the floor. So, it is effectively closer to 8". My Norse paddle does have a rather large feeling solum style blade. It is 8"x18" but it feels bigger than ...

How does boat size change ideal paddle length?

Ok, so this may be a really bad question and it may be dealt with in old posts but the search terms are so common in this forum that there are more results than can be sorted though in a reasonable time. I am moving from a 15' Nova Craft Prospector to this: https://sites.google.com/a/harchak.com/www...

Make sure you look under the heading "kayak" when you are looking on craigslist and other classifieds. Most "hey let's steal that cool teal thing-of-a-jig" types are goin to be doing well just to identify it as a watercraft.

A lot depends on the vehicle. I had a rather aerodynamic car that just adding an empty roof rack cut 2-3 mpg. On my full size truck I can haul a classic canoe on a ladder rack and only loose 1-2 mpg highway with a full load and a motorcycle in a receiver hitch rack. The less aerodynamic the basic sh...

Thanks for the input Pat. What you are saying is pretty much in line with what I had been finding. I also agree that there are a lot of boats out there that big guys paddle but that are less ideal for them. In many cases even the longer boats are designed for smaller paddlers and the big guys just n...

Thanks to all for your input. I am not opposed to longer boats but I wanted to see what thoughts you had on some of the shorter ones for us big guys. I will try to paddle some of the shorter boats that have been mentioned.

Large Paddler in a short boat - is there hope?

Ok, so I know that I'll get a million reply's telling to "search the dang forum". I have searched and can't seem to find much referencing us over 225 pound paddlers so here goes. I am a relatively short 5'8" 240lbs paddler and would love to get into of the under 10' boats that seem to be gaining pop...

I know this is an old thread at this point but I'll add my two bits also. When you talk about whitewater tripping it helps to define what you are talking about. If you are looking at class II and class III whitewater then you may want to consider an even larger canoe. I am 5'8" also and I use a 15 N...
