Head down is a big one that everybody's mentioned. One minor thing that hasn't been mentioned is timing. A roll is a bit like snapping a whip- it starts with knees and hips and then travels up to your torso. You drag your torso/head in a second later, after your lower body has righted the hull. My m...

You guys must really sit low. I used some NRS felt soled booties for many years with no problems. Great traction, thick enough for walking on gravel, etc. Never a problem with comfort or ejecting while in the boat. But those wore out and I ended up with some booties with a rubber sole that was thinn...

I live near that section of the New, and the French Broad (at least Section 9, Barnard to Hot Springs) is a big step up. Glad you're still with us! Do you know about the Creek Freaks in Franklin Co.? They probably have some good paddlers who could help with whitewater technique. Having the skills wi...

Skirt makers?
I have an old Mountain Surf custom skirt for a conversion (taller tunnel, and moved forward) that will need replacing before too long. I know Mt. Surf will still do this, but was wondering what other makers will do the C-1 custom skirt and are recommended?

I consider a rudder to be thumb-up, and a J to be thumb-down Shep OK, just checking. I've seen the J taught in the thumb-up position, and when I mention thumb-down to some boaters they look at me like I'm crazy. You're right, the cross forward is probably going to be more effective in this situatio...

If you think about it, when you are paddling onside, and making a ferry towards your offside, your paddle is on the upstream side of your boat. In this position, the only way to turn upstream is to rudder/J stroke, which hurts your momentum. I avoid this during ferries for the reason you mention. T...

The Encore and XL-13 are comparable, but you probably got the better deal. It's an especially good boat for big water like the New River Gorge or Lower Gauley, and an excellent beginner boat. Ash gunwales do break, I've been on a trip where it happened to someone, and they're expensive to replace. B...

I did this many years ago to my Ocoee at Lower Railroad on the New, where Clamshell Rock was just underwater and I didn't know the river very well. Anyway, someone advised boiling some water, tipping the canoe so that the hot water would sit right over the dent, let it sit a couple of minutes, then ...

I haven't heard of this measurement method. It sounds reasonable, but I suspect there are significant discrepancies compared to the method I've always used: sit in the boat on the water, hold the paddle vertically, submerge the blade to the neck, and the t-grip should be at eye or eyebrow level. I'm...

I test drove one when it first came out, looking for something more performance-oriented than my Prophet at the time, and was sorely disappointed. As the previous poster said, it's stable, tracks well, and would be good for teaching someone to solo canoe. It's less performance-oriented than any of t...
