Great thread -- always worth refreshing us on this topic. In addition to the First-Aid stuff, and the pin kit, I always carry waterproof matches and a sheet of thin reflective foil. (Hypothermia is always a concern north of 49.) I also carry a small Silva compass, in case someone has to hike out (ou...

From my experience, I'm not surprised you parted company with the XL 12. I recall it as having no appreciable stability of the sort your size and experience is seeking. On the other hand, the XL 13 is a stable and predictable workhorse which you might like -- dry and surfable. The Vertige is also a ...

Western Canoeing (Clipper) makes a WW tandem boat called the MERGANSER. It's 15' plus change, and 34 - 36" wide. Rocker is mild, but the boat surfs well, bounces fairly well through big waves, and is very stable -- even when full. Good speed. Volume enuff for two big honkers, or as a WW tripping boa...

Thanks, Pat, for your work to bring us north-westerners together. Here's another event for the calendar: It's the Un-Likely Paddlefest , held annually on the 3rd weekend in September (this year -- Sept. 17 - 19). Where? Beautiful downtown Likely, BC -- about an hour north-east of Williams Lake (whic...

Fink vs Cascade vs Atom
Thank you to Smurfwarrior for initiating the recent discussion comparing the Cascade to the Atom. I'd be grateful to hear additional comments on how the Fink compares with both Dagger boats: general performance, best uses, weight range of paddlers, stability, turnability, rollability, surfability, e...

Great question. We have an above-ground pool, and tried rolling a Cascade in it last summer. The pool is circular -- the boat (around 11') barely fit, so the diameter of the pool must have been around 11' (duh-h). Depth of the water was belly-button deep on a dumpy short-ass 5'7" guy. Me, actually. ...

The Ocoee hull is symmetrical. ("Awl saim bak tu frunt" as k-boaters would put it.) I know this, because I tried turning around and facing the other end. I missed eddies with the same ease as t'other way. The only problem with turning around was that I started at the take-out, and ended up at the pu...

Tandem flotation bags -- help, please!
The recent thread on outfitting tandem boats raised a question for me: North of 49, there's a good selection of end bags, in a variety of lengths, which fill the bow and stern sections of a tandem boat. But I'm having trouble finding smallish rectangular bags to fill the space between bow & stern se...

Ocoee saddle placement? First, I've always found it easier to measure from the center line, rather from either end. Rough guideline for neutral float position is to place your bellybutton directly over the center line, while leaning slightly forward. (Those with "outies", or pendulous bellies, adjus...
