I tried puting a gyramax saddle in my CD Solstice HV. I figured the 24" wide hull would be somewhat stable. I didn't realize that the round bottom would force my knees to the center which was really uncomfortable as well as not very stable. I was able to keep it up through a few power boat wakes but...

Dunno about trying. Got too many boats as it is. Definately be interested in seeing it paddled by someone who's familiar with it. If the Assabet out in Maynard gets up around 3' you might consider taking it there. It's easy class II right through town. Just be ready to duck going under the bri...

Outrage
Larry, I'm 195 and I'm quite happy with my Outrage, but, if you don't mind the extra foot you might like the Outrage X better. I'm told it's dryer. My limited experience in a Nitro was not great. Mostly it felt like a beach ball, slow and hard to lock onto a carve. I realy like the Detonator but it'...

Outrage & Paddles
Pat, I weigh in at 195. The Outrage works fine for me on the New England class IIIs that I paddle. I thought that the X felt very similar. The only difference I noticed was 6" more on either end to get in my way. I like shorter boats and if I had to choose a different OC1 it would be a Detonator (10...

Boats
In a nutshell there's your Mad River Outrage/OutrageX, Dagger Ovation, Rival, Caption Esquif Nitro, Detonator Mohawk Probe These are all good OC1 playboats that will let you run anything and surf your brains out. Generaly reasonably forgiving so they are good first playboats. Many folks stay with on...

"Perhaps it's the difference between backgrounds/mentalities in tripping vs. playboating" Bingo. I'll bet most folks here condider themselves playboaters and/or slalom boaters. Either way we're talking smaller more maneuverable boats and only enough gear to get through the day. I know I'd be a lot m...

Serious is what you think it is.
There's plenty of OC paddlers on class IV here in New England. I expect most of them consider themselves intermediate paddlers. OTOH I consider myself an intermediate and I find class III plenty challenging. There's a broad range of skill within intermediate. There's also a broad range of difficulty...

OCs
I'm partial to the Outrage but at 12' it's the same size as the Rival.
The Detonator is a sweet boat. At 10' it still has some speed but spins much better than the Outrage.
The Zoom is even smaller but I've never tried one.
Hey! Anybody know where a New England boy could demo a Prelude?

Older 'n' dirt
I'm 45. Been paddling for about 8 years now, always in New England. My favorite run is the Dead at 2400+ cfs. My favorite boat is the Outrage...nah it's the Slasher... nah it's the Foreplay... nah I love 'em all! When I grow up I want to be a Flip Monkey Rodeo Hole Junkie and learn to run some gates...

Monkey See...
On the Farmington River in Otis, Mass they have a slalom race in October. At the top of the race course there is a sweet surfing wave with a nice river left eddy service. I'm no racer but I do love to surf. The problem is it's fairly easy to get ejected from the wave on river right. The next eddy th...

outfitting
The D-ring glue will not hold to a tupperware boat.
My Foreplay (outfitted by Alden B) has a 1" aluminum tube running from the pedestal to the forward pillar close to the floor. It might run all the way back to the rear pillar. The thighstraps run to that and it seems to be solid.

Blocking & Reading
Well I'm hardly an expert but... There are two things I've been taught to keep my open boat dry. The first is blocking, leaning the boat to block a wave that would otherwise fill you up. The second and IMO much more difficult is reading the water and putting your boat where it will take on the least...
