I agree with the others on how quickly a pump works.

I have a 500 gph pump in my L'Edge, and I did a test once I installed the pump. I filled the boat to the gunwales with water and it took 9 minutes to empty. http://youtu.be/iQC58YVGA6o?t=45s

I've never had that much water in my boat when paddling, but about half that many times. Where there's nowhere to dump (steep banks/canyon), but an eddy, it can be useful to rest while the pump dumps, then peel out lighter.

Pea Pod- you used a 500 gph pump instead of the 'standard' 1200 gph pump. That explains your slow pump time. To accurately time the pump you need to be in the boat as your lower body displaces water. When I turn my pump on it only takes about 30 seconds until I can tell a huge difference in how the boat is paddling. For consistent, walled in canyon runs its a huge safety enhancement especially if you are boating with 'hey diddle diddle straight down the middle' kayakers who bomb the runs without stopping.

Any canoe that's made out of anything besides fiberglass or aluminum is cheating. Using floatation bags or thigh straps is also cheating.

Funny that you should mention that. I once put a truck inner tube in my Grumman and held it under the thwarts with two boards. I thought that the canoe was now indestructible. Ha Ha. Wedged the canoe between two rocks and it was so wedged that six of us couldn't move it. That's when I graduated to an Old Town Tripper. Still no air bags though (or pumps).

Agreed. I've always had a sense that the fish are laughing at us in our fancy-shpancy boats and weird outfits.

I'm swimming in my birthday suit from now on. No pumps, helmet--no nothin.

Not sure where I'll attach my gopro to share my adventures with y'all. Maybe you'll just have to take my word for it: that I'm running high-grade, boulder-studded sets with big drops during spring thaw.
