Help with ABS Slurry

I'm ready to slather some ABS/Acetone slurry to bare areas on a hull and wonder about the consistency of the mix. I understand that if it is too "wet" it can soften the hull. My mix is about the consistency of a milkshake and would easily pour out of the paint can it is in. Is this Ok? Should I add more ABS and get it a little thicker> I plan to have the hull slightly warm (heat lamp under neath) and moving air from a fan passing over it while it cures. TIA. Jack

use thin layers

Thinner layers will dry quicker and be less likely to deform the hull. The acetone will work its way into the lower layers and the whole thing takes a while to dry out. Just because the top feels dry, it is not. I recommend waiting a day or more between layers.

If you want to push it, be sure to provide support on the inside in case the hull softens and sags - been there done that. :o

Jack,

Jims post was accurate with my experience. Here is a few other tips I have found. A piece of minicell foam make a good squeegy to apply the mixture. Tape off the area and only make one application pass...anymore and the mixture will pill and chunk up.
Good Luck

David, I used a 3" putty knife and stopped spreading when the ABS began to skin over. So far so good. The Ocoee took and A#% whipping last weekend on Island Creek.

At the right consistency - about milkshake - I find it is "self leveling" and if you over work it, it will "chunk up" as noted above...
