The goal for the Octane 85 is to make a boat that will work well for the smaller, lighter people who want a river running boating. Basically, the people who like the Ion, but want a bit more speed. The Option is more optimized for creeking for medium-large paddlers

To hit the main differences:
Weight- the 85 will be lighter. Since the Option is more intended to smash into rocks, it needs a bit more plastic.
Speed- my feeling is the 85 might be a little bit faster then the Option, but I'd say they're pretty close
Stability. Secondary stability is similar, with the 85 having more primary stability than the Option.
Dryness- At about 170lbs, I found the baby octane to be a slightly wetter than the 3rd gen Option. For lighter paddlers, I don't think think it will be noticablely different.
Handling- The Octane 85 has the same chine design as the large Octane and the Ion, which is considerably sharper than the Option, so I feel like overall, it's a 'crisper' feeling boat. The edge engages nicely when you want it to, and off you go. It also surfs really nicely.

Since I'll have both, and be able to pick between the two, I'd say if I'm going creeking, running slides and drops and bouncing and boofing down low-volume rock-pile type runs, I'm going to take the Option. If I'm doing something with more water, dodging and surfing waves, occasional boofs, and more general "river running" I'll take the Octane 85.

Rodeo is there a way those of us who like the Ion and want something a bit more speed can get a thicker hull on the octane 85?

I'm guessing the thickness will end up being pretty similar to the Ion. It'll just be thinner than the Option, which is pretty overbuilt.
