I'd feel like a shmuck creating and adding a section to cboats on rolling when I can't! Then again... hrmmm... Adam could be the camera man and I'd be the vict... errr, model showing how it's done! It would be good practice AND motivation. I'll let you know how it goes.

Taught myself to roll (OC-1 Outrage and C-1 Batmax ) with Bob Foote's video, which has underwater views. Of the before mentioned resources in this thread, (with the exception of Paul Mason's vid, which I haven't seen) I found Foote's video to be the most helpful on rolling. www.whitewatervideo.com
I'd like to see a video that demos different styles of rolls with underwater views.

the thrill of rolling
hey nice to see someones using the thrill.
maybe for underwater instruction you could open it to the page you need put it in a ziploc bag...
another idea is suggested on this pg. http://www.bubblestreet.ca/k/k7.html cartoon #3
-anyway the dvd I made doesn't have underwater stuff. although it does cover other stuff. Would burn anyone a copy that wants one, i'll figure out cost if there is a demand. Email me if you want to see a small preview.
Otherwise...step the boat upright then keep yer head down low.

underwater footage
Hutch, I don`t think that underwater videos are very helpful for the beginner.
I think its better to learn first the last part of the roll: getting the boat upright, starting with the upper body "lying" on the watersurface. Watch Kent fords rolling part in "Solo Playboating" carefully and follow all his steps.
Read also the rolling part of "Thrill of the paddle" very carefully.
Greetings Frank

Anyway, if it's helpful or not, here you can find some videos, some from unterwater, too.

Keep practicing. Its just a low brace.
To start put paddle on bow. Crouch heaD forward onto bow bag. The set up perpendicular to the hull. Your hand position should be similar to doing a push up. If they are not, you risk shoulder injury.
SNAP THEM HIPS!!!! Then low brace it. Sweep your head across the bow bag, you want your nose to virtually scrape across the bag. Your head weighsd about 20 lbs, so keep it low. Also, this weight/momentum helps to keep the boat rolling. paddle should be on the bow deck plate when finished.
Heres a good way to practice hip snaps: get into pool and grab onto the side, just sit there and snap your boat up until you get the feel for it. Also get someone to spot you when practicing with a paddle. Its all in the hips and head so keep that in mind. I can roll a c-boat without a paddle, so that illustrates hip/head importance. Good luck dude.

Florian - excellent links - the second one with the split screen is especially illustrative
Tiggy - to take the side of the pool practice to the next level, put a raw egg in your hand while holding onto the side

Those rolls looks very dangerous especially in shallow water
Why nobody use simply sweep roll. like kayakers

Here's some more (posted on Canadian Canoe Routes forum):

The "almost" video is a standard up & back "deep low brace" onside roll. The second is a hybrid roll that starts with "a kayakers" high brace roll, but then finishes with a standard low brace. I liked the video for its view of their t-grip hand.
Beereddy, What about the low brace roll makes it seem more dangerous? For either roll (low or high brace), you can come underneath the boat in the same high brace fashion. People usually then switch their paddle face to a low brace because it's less likely to strain a shoulder.

So, it's a question of how you come under the canoe (which is the same for either high or low roll), and not how you actually roll the boat.
I guess it's different for kayakers because they can always roll up on the side they flipped to?
The alternative for canoes would be to switch hands when they flip offside and roll back up without having to pass under the canoe.
Doesn't work for me because my roll's not very good on one side.
Basically, tucked forward to the airbag you're not that exposed, and if you are in a shallow stretch where you're not comfortable rolling, you just get out.
I've tried to roll using a kayaker's high brace sweep, and it felt wrong on my shoulder, and I couldn't do it.
I think lots of playboaters use a high brace roll in a hole, but it's risky for your shoulder with a bigger OC-1 on "flat" water.

Don't look at those as examples of how to roll. The number of times my roll has worked while actually paddling can be counted on on hand. Well, OK counted on one finger.
Sandie
Edit: I tried the "hybrid" roll in desperation as my ordiary canoe roll does not work. The hybrid is just as bad in action though. The videos were done to try and find where I'm going wrong.
roll
Hi Sandie,
I like to tell my body the things it should do in some kind of "movement pictures", these are for my roll the most important:
- I push with my offside leg and want to tear my my onside leg to my onside ear. (>> turning the boat with the hips, keeping the butt on the seat).
- I want to push myself out of the water with my forehead on the shaft hand. (>> body is pushing not the arms)
- I want to read what is written on the side of my boat (>> keep the head in the water as long as possible)
- I want to scratch my nose on the offside gunnel (keep the body and head low)
I can do only a roll without a forward sweep at the end, don`t know why...
