Salmonberry River Expedition

In the coast range of Oregon lies the fabled Salmonberry River, a river with a single road to the put-in and no other road to it until the take-out some 12 miles later. The river runs along an abandoned railroad track that wasn't rebuilt after landslides in the 1996 deluge. The steep road down to the river at the put-in is 4-wheel drive only and at the end of the day is a tough drive out in fading light.
Ten paddlers from the Lower Columbia Canoe Club ran the river recently. Level was about 1830 cfs on the Wilson River to the south--a low level to run the Salmonberry, but it worked out, particularly after the confluence with the North Fork. One kayaker ran Chew Chew (Class IV) and so did one canoeist, but since he was the videographer, that run will remain fabled like the river. There were two log portages that weren't there when we last ran it (November 2014).
