New Freestyle OC1?

Post by Gwyn »

Just got back from the Final day of the Freestyle worlds on the Ottawa.

Andy Hill from Canada won the OC1 in his homemade composite boat;

http://www.worldfreestylekayakchampions ... _Final.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(and using a Shaggy Designs paddle!)

We have been working a bit with Andy on his new boat, and it obvously paddles well!

So, is there the demand out there for another freestyle OC1, this time in composite? Please chip in with your opinions, and we might think about starting to produce them...

Thanks
Gwyn

Thanks for the news, Gwyn! Congrats to Andy!

Pix of the new boat??

Is there demand for a new design? Hm-m. . . Does Andy provide instruction? If I could learn how to paddle one, I'd buy it!

Well done to Andy for the win!

The big question is, can you cut one large enough for my lard-butt?

I've tried converting my Session+ but I don't have the balance for it or flexibility to go lower than 6" seat, but usually I can get into my slalom boat with 4" seat because the hull is wider and I can get a better leg position (currently I'm struggling with that, and I'm racing at the weekend, hmmm). I know you used to make your C1's proper width rather than kayak width, so maybe a new properly designed boat that lets me get low on the seat would be the way forward. Of course the Pagan may be good enough for me, a big cut Sith almost certainly would be but I would smash the ends at Pinkston :( Short boats needed for small courses! I can hit the bottom with Session+ as a kayak, I'm using my Glide again for kayak playboating, not because it's shorter but I can control the angle of my cartwheels better and miss the bottom most of the time! I really need a more modern boat though, and to learn some modern moves!

So my answer is maybe, maybe if you can make it fit me I would definitely think a lot harder about getting one!

But.... maybe not for another 12 months, spent a lot on boats recently and still trying to decide what to take to the Grand Canyon next September - I may need yet another boat before then!

Any video to share of the boat in action?

Congratulations to Andy on his win at the worlds. And thanks for continuing to bring new boat design ideas to the canoeing community, Gwynn!

You can see the boat in action via this link: https://www.worldfreestylekayakchampion ... atch-live/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The video link at the top is the finals and if you scroll lower down you can see OC1 prelims listed as well.

I personally am interested in a composite playboat the caveat being that it has to work for a 6' 220ish person. I like the idea of a dedicated playboat especially here on the Potomac and I would like to avoid going the C1 route. Is there currently only one of these out there?

Which paddle is he using?

Cool,
thanks for the comments all of you.

Andy was using one of our foamcore carbon paddles on a cranked wooden shaft. Andy made the shaft as he has a woodworking business, and I put the blade on it for him.

Andy is not a big guy, so the boat that he is paddling would be the smallest version. There would be several larger (wider and longer) sizes.

This is not something that will be done by next week - it takes a while to go from a prototype to a production version. Still in discussions, but leaning towards making this happen for next season.

Thanks

Gwyn,
Apologies for not reading the question properly!

Composite OC1 playboat, er, yes please!

I know I could get a composite Kaos and I really should try one, but I know yours will be built from a canoeists perspective :)

Otherwise most of my C1 requirements are equally valid, and if you could have something prototyped that would take me at say 110kg (aiming to lose more, but have to be realistic) down the canyon (i.e. plus water bottles and camera and dry bag with day kit in) before next September.... ;)

Too many boats I need to try!

Hi Gywn we met you at last year Whitewater Nationals- we would be interested in a composite playboat up here in the Yukon for Pelly to train with. But would really depend on price at the end of the day. the bow would have to be built pretty rugged as our play wave is shallow and hitting the bow happens on occosion
