I've never run baby falls, but here are some general guidelines for running drops... Please comment if anything I say is incorrect.

If you want to: Stay dry, Keep speed, Land upright etc.
Hit the drop with speed, plant your paddle past the lip, pull a hard boof stroke. Easiest done with a carve towards your onside. If you need to flatten the boat out more, aggressively bring your knees to your chest.

Also, when boofing any drop it is important to lean slightly forward always. This will allow any excess force to slam your chest into your airbag which will be much more pleasant than having that force compress the lumbar part of your spine.

Note that running anything tall this way can mess you up.

If you want to plug the drop to ensure minimum impact force.
Paddle with just enough speed to clear any sketchy part of the curtain. Speed will also minimize your chances of going over vertical (landing on your face). When you hit the lip, wait until you are at the angle you want and take a gentle stroke to set this angle (this will also help with not going over vertical. Tuck forward with paddle to the side and wait for the impact. Roll up and fist pump.

dudes, with such an interesting thread how is a cartoonist supposed to get any artwork done:)
-good points in this thread. i'd like to clarify:
-curling your back is not a crunch. curling your back is a smooth subtle movement that won't change the attitude of your canoe, much. (good clip off curling at baby fall in the intro to my boof ramp video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_5Q6o-b ... ature=plcp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- crunching is indeed used to pull the bow up, especially significant when you do the "hop"
long boats, yes leaning back helps but the attitude of the boat is affected a lot more by;angle of boat to the lip, stroke and speed...in that order.

Well... leaning back in a Spark tends to matter quite a lot.
Been there. Done that. Nearly perfect pencil.

No, I meant crunching forward (Cannonballing) to pull the bow up has less effect in a longer boat. In a longer boat you need to either grab the lip hard enough and/or boof sideways so the stern clears and you land flat. Trying to go off straight ....well, you have seen what happens! 8)

I'd test that theory but am taking the L'Edge to ALF this year. :P

Someone should post a video where someone changes the attitude of their canoe by lifting with their knees.

For Baby, focus more on being on line than the lip itself. That's where most blow it.

Paul,
I would appreciate hearing about how 'angle of boat to lip' affects the boof. Please. (You wanted to take a break from the drawing board anyway, right?)
Thanks.

Which smile indicates mostly open-mouthed awe (with some envy)

Also, as an aside, how do you get the nice nested quotes? When I use the quote button I get what you see here

Great videos!! One thing that you might try when running "normal" waterfalls: Way before you get anywhere near the lip take two very short, hard strokes (just for practice). You'll notice that the bow of your canoe rises into the air. Now, when you get near the lip take the two short hard strokes right before the lip. On the second stroke bring your knees up. This only seems to work with short canoes with lots of rocker.
