Helmet time

Any guidance on selecting a helmet?
Here's my basics.
6'4" 270lbs, I paddle a Mad River Me, bags, perception saddle. So far nothing more than class 3.
Have started trying to surf and play now that I have my mohawk bags in place, have swam twice in deep enough water to be ok, but feel like my head needs protection.

Full face vs open? Would there be any concerns for cross stroke and hitting the face guard? I also have a full beard, probably 5-6 inches in length. Would not like it to get caught in between the guard and my shoulder. Heading to Gauley fest this year and would like to try the Middle if I'm prepared enough, helmet included.

also, i have a large noggin, not sure of the size, but most caps don't fit this giant melon of mine, its like sputnik, round but quick pointy in parts.

I just started using a WRSI Moment. It's my first full face helmet. The face guard doesn't bother me at all. It didn't affect my cross strokes or rolling. I tend to forget it's there (which looks pretty silly when I try to drink from my water bottle).

You definitely need a helmet. Good call. I won't even paddle a swift without one on. Getting out of the boat with numb legs is challenging enough and I've taken a couple good spills that way

WRSI helmets have the option now for piece that attaches to their helmets to make it a full face. That might be a good option for you. Unfortunately I think the only way to answer your question is to try on a couple.
