Children's Books about WW Canoeing

Post by Fleetwalker »

On Monday (March 25), I get to be Guest Reader in my daughter's 2nd grade class. Since we start the racing season soon, I'd love to have a book that touches on WW canoeing. I may read some part of Holling C. Holling's Paddle-to-the-Sea. However, I thought I might leverage the collective wisdom here to see if anyone knows of other books that might work.

It needs to be:

(a) Appropriate for second graders
(b) Have a story
(c) Readable in say 15-20 minutes (either in whole or in an understandable part)
(d) Preferrably have pictures
(e) Something I could conceivable get my hands on at a U.S. public library

Thanks!

Three in Norway (by two of them) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_in_N ... of_them%29

It has a quite trilling part where they paddle down the Sjoa River.

Try "Paddle to the Sea"

http://www.amazon.com/Paddle-----Sea-Sa ... e+sea+book" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My kids loved it at that age

There is a copy of this in my house somewhere. As I recall, it is a cautionary tale about careful scouting.

Whitewater Scrubs by Jamie McEwan
It is really about kayaking, but I switch a few words around and include some cross bow action for my kids.

Thanks everyone. I went with Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe by Vera Williams. It seemed to go over well. I brought in some props (whistle, PFD, helmet, throw bag) and mixed in mini-safety meeting. The kids thought the throw-bag was pretty neat.
