Open Boaters Needed for Sunday's Chattooga Clean-up 6/24/12

Post by Roger_Nott »

We know open boats are ideal for comfort, visability, getting in and out easily, and hauling gear and unseated kayakers back to their boats. They also are essential for making a river clean-up successful. (We don't use the term "garbage scow.")
We need your help this Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the Chattooga River Clean-up sponsored by American Rivers, American Whitewater, the Georgia Canoeing Association and the Atlanta Whitewater Club at the Chattooga River Festival. We plan to clean several sections of the river and access areas.
We will meet at the Bull Sluice parking lot at Hwy. 76 on the South Carolina
side of the river at 9:30 a.m. and will split up into groups and running shuttles from there. Each group will clean 2-3 miles of river and may do recreational paddles after they are through.
The conditions predicted for Sunday are ideal. It will be warm, getting up to 87 degrees, a 20% chance or rain and even be a mild NE tailwind! We'll have a low but adequate water level, currently 1.29 on the Hwy. 76 USGS gauge. This is an excellent level for a clean-up, not scrapey but low enough easily to land and get in and out of your boat.
The Chattooga offers stretches of varying difficulty. There are flatwater
sections on Lake Tugaloo and from Hwy 28 for a couple of miles to take-out on
Low Water Bridge Road, and there’s about 5 miles of easy class II from there to
Earl’s Ford. There is a stunningly beautiful class II-III 3 mile section from
Earl’s to Sandy fords which even allows a riverside take-out on the Georgia side
(no carrying!). We will have groups putting in at Fall Creek and Thrifts Ferry at the end of Section IIII and also some cleaning Section IV. Bring a face mask if you fancy diving for cans and counting trout. We will certainly take some time out for swimming in the Chattooga’s cool, clear waters.
The GCA, AWC, and AW will be sharing a booth at the Chattooga River Festival on Saturday and are offering free camping Friday and/or Saturday night at the Chattooga Camping Resort, complete with pizza and liquid refreshment. See for camping details:

We will also have snacks and drinks on the river for the cleaners and volunteer T-shirts.
Let me know if you can help. Come join the fun. You certainly would be welcome just showing up Sunday at 9:30 a.m., though if you can let me know you are coming, please do so.
