A DISCOURSE OF THE JOURNEYE TO THE UNLIKELY PADDLEFESTE, AND THE SAFE RETURN THEREFROM

The 13th Daye of September, in the Yeare of our Lord 2009, being designated by Her Royale Majestye as Rivers Daye, we did take it upon ourselves to venture forth with divers crafte to partake of the festivityes related thereto.

Arising early in the predawne, and assembling forthwith in our encampment on the shores of Wil-Yum’s Lake, our expedition did soon set off overlande, northward to the unlikely settlement of Likely, located near the headwateres of the Caribou Riviere.

Upon arrival, we soon discerned, with heavy heartes, that upon examination of the crafte assembled for the purpose of journeying forthe on the riviere, most were of a design developed by the Esquimaux of the distant north, knowne as Kye-Hacks.

Indeed, we endured much chaffing from the Kye-Hackers as to the appearance and function of the Canoes which we had chosen for the voyage. Responding lustily, we soon demonstrated the superiority of our verbal skilles, using wordes of more than one syllable, and withal, soundely berated the Kye-Hackers for their indiscriminations.

They are an incontinent lot, these Kye-Hackers, considering it the marke of manhood (or womanhoode,) to drool and nosepicke indiscriminately, and we were fain to distance ourselves from them throughout the voyage.

Our brigade soon took to the water with a will, and rapide after rapide soon flowed beneathe our canoes. Our sphincteres tightened as we approached that portion of the riviere known as “le Nez de Nicole”, (Nicole’s Nose), and we recalled the multitudes of voyageurs who had been swept to their ignominye thereon (and therein). Notwithstanding, our loyal crew emerged unscathed and relatively dry, and in recognition for their steadfasteness, I was fain to promise them an extra gill of spirites at the end of the journey.

All too soon, the abandoned settlement of Quesnelle Forkes hove into view, and with heavy hearts we beached our canoes for the last time this season.

Leaving the Kye-Hackers to their Peet-Sa and Bière, we ventured forth to the local hostelry for our evening repast of Vintage Wines and Fine Viands – punctuated by divers toastes to the successe of our Expedition, and to the supremity of the canoe as the perfecte watercrafte.

C’est l’aviron qui nous mène en haut!
