Re: Birmingham, AL questions

Yo Mikey, Having lived here most of my life (and traveled often), here's my two cents: The summers are rough especially compared to what you guys have. To simulate the experience, get fully dressed, lock yourself in your bathroom, and turn the shower on as hot as it will go. After a few minutes, you...

Re: Fiberglass Mold Making

I built a composite canoe earlier this year. Instead of using an existing canoe for the shape, I built a male mold out of plywood and foam. I used epoxy resin, three layers of 5oz Kevlar, and one layer of 6oz S-glass. I am a complete amateur but here are some things I learned: 1. I used plastic wrap...

Re: Build your own boat, composite

Here is my first attempt at making a composite OC-1. It's a hasty effort and more of an experiment than anything. Looking at the lines of the Paradigm, the Inferno, and even the L'edge, I noticed that the hulls were mostly flat surfaces with rounded chines. So I built a simple plywood mold with a fe...

Re: Update on Mohawk

It'd be great to buy another canoe from Mohawk. I was thinking about them yesterday while out paddling. When I bought my boat from them, they showed me around the factory and outfitted my canoe while I waited. Great guys and just two hours away. Bring on the new designs!

Re: WTB: Pyranha Prelude, Blackfly Option, or Esquif L'edge

I have an orange/yellow sunburst Pyranha Prelude that I'd part with. It has bags and a foam saddle where your knees lock under a shaped crossmember. The previous owner replaced the vinyl gunnels with wood but they did a good job. It's also wired for a pump but does not have one. I bought it used las...

Width and Stability (good article)

Here's a good article about canoe/kayak stability. It makes me think of the Octane models and their reputation for being stable. [url][/http://www.kudzucraft.com/articles/widt ... ity.phpurl]

Re: Trying to control a solo canoe

I feel your pain, bro. I bought a Prelude and every trip is like walking a tightrope. This beginner is thinking about trading it for something longer...and wider...and with outriggers.

Re: Dagger Legend 15

I owned a Legend 15 last year. Great boat. Mine weighed about 55 pounds, was easy to carry, paddled well, and was sort of a "Swiss-Army" type canoe. It could tandem, it could solo, it could run Class II's. Wish I had the room right now to replace it.

Horseshoes?

For several years, I lived near Blackwater Creek in Jasper, Alabama. I could put in on Curry Hwy (AL. 257) and paddle about 2.5 miles through some great Class 2/3 rapids. Then, I'd take out, portage a half mile over the hill, and put back in a quarter mile from the put in. This "horseshoe" has been ...

Great looking boat. I dig the color scheme. Do you have any plans to build an OC-1? Maybe something in kevlar?

Re: An Honest Salesman

Good advice from all. Thanks! I'm curious, though. What makes a Prelude one of the worst boats to learn in? What would be the qualities/hull characteristics of a good beginner boat (other than some outriggers)? JC P.S. I'm planning to attend the Nantahala paddle school this spring. Until then, I'll ...

An Honest Salesman

So I bought my first OC-1 from a member of this forum (Pyranha Prelude). We finally received some rain here in north central Alabama (and I live a quarter mile from the Cahaba River) so today was its maiden voyage. The guy who sold it to me said three things about the boat: 1. It's tippy. 2. There's...

Thanks, Richard. Still enjoying the Solo 13. A picture I took of it was actually used in an article I saw on the internet. Excellent boat.
