Re: ideas for lightweight thwarts

So an old Carbon Paddle shaft works great - If you don't have one, you can order graphite tubing here and cut to length... http://www.mudhole.com/Rod-Building/Han ... g-0-920-ID" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Need help identifying which model of 1979 Perception can

Perception was never really known for their glass boats... I paddled a few many, many moons ago - definitely not state of the art even at the time.

Re: Long Shot, but.....

You can actually print them yourself. A decent quality inkjet or laser printer is all you need. The vinyl media is available here - http://www.papilio.com/inkjet%20waterproof%20adhesive%20film%20media.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Print your image, spray over it with Krylon Cle...

Re: "Machine" outfitting?

Machines are nothing more than rigid fixed straps - somewhat of a cross between a bulkhead and straps. I had a set of aluminum machines (covered with foam) in an old ultramax. The benefit is that if you get the fit right, you lose the flex that a fabric strap has, so the boat can be more responsive....

Re: Need help identifying which model of 1979 Perception can

So - a totally wild guess here, but that boat looks a lot like a Steve Scarborough boat. About that time I think Dagger was just building paddles and a few one-off boats that Steve was racing...

Re: paddle suggestions

I am definitely partial to the Mitchell Premier. It is offered in a variety of configurations - Wood Shaft/ Glass covered Wood Blade, Carbon Shaft/Glass covered Wood Blade, Carbon shaft/Carbon covered Wood Blade.

All have roped edges and aluminum tip.

Re: Tripping Canoe Layup ideas

PVC Foam will be lighter than coremat/auromat as it won't absorb resin, and due the the thickness, will be stiffer, BUT it will be harder to shape the ribs and get them properly seated without bagging... For a one-off, 1 layer of 4 mm Coremat covered by a layer of fabric will be adequate. For true d...

My previous lab spent a bunch of time with me on the Nanty and Tuck in a Bluehole OCA - Even though it is very old school, I paddled an awful lot of stuff solo in the OCA too...

Re: Protecting royalite? Foam exposed

PE cloth is cheap. It should not be creased in storage as wrinkles are hard to remove. Wrinkled chunks of cloth should not be used. You can use an iron to remove minor wrinkles. Exactly - PE or Dynel are going to be more flexible than glass - and lower profile than kevlar felt. G-Flex is more flexi...

Re: Vacuum bagging composite repairs

John, any composite repair can be done with vacuum bagging. All of the normal benefits of vacuum bagging do apply - higher fiber to resin ratio, less trapped air, reduced bulk, ability to meet complex curves. For thin laminates or through cracks, you need to ensure that the crack is adequately seale...

Shep wrote: If you are concerned about squeezing the sides of the boat, you could drill holes in either end of two boards, and tie the webbing in a loop so the boards hang flat, and rest the boat gunwales on the board near the bow and stern.
I'll second this...

I wonder if any ww paddler has ever had to deal with real USCG enforcement. So, I haven't had to deal with USCG on a river, but I do a lot of offshore fishing - and I have been boarded by the USCG doing routine boarding sweeps. They will specifically look for an equal number of unmodified, CG label...

I probably make more in a month now than I made in a whole season guiding - and we have long seasons here in NC... But I never got the call at 0-dark-30 that the server is down - we need you in here now... either. Having a bad day - grab the boat after the last trip and go rip off a few enders, or s...

Re: tailored PFD

Many years ago, Extrasport was just getting into low profile racing type PFDs - I was lucky enough to get an early one - before they had passed CG certification - Wore that jacket daily - the rangers on the Nantahala saw me nearly that often - but for some reason the decided to make an example of me...
