Decap rock, yeah there are two on the Chattoooga

There is Decap rock at Bull Sluice. It is in the bottom of the first drop. The other Decap rock is in Jawbone. It is above Hydroelectric rock. The Jawbone Decap is the one Rick Bernard drowned under in 1979. He was in the eddy on river right immediately above it when he peeled out low and the stern ...

Paddler with pith helmet

That's Miller Templeton! He was the leader for ORGT (Outdoors Recreation at Georgia Tech). A great person who led many students on paddling, hiking and spelunking trips. He introduced a lot of us to the Chattooga. His trademark was that helmet. The first section of the video was a trip on the headwa...

First time in a canoe

I paddled a rental canoe with my father on the lake at Stone Mt. Park near Atlanta. I don't remember how old I was, but it must have been in the late sixties. I messed around in lake canoes at the park on and off in the seventies. My first river trip was on the metro Hooch in 1981. After that I want...

Swim confession poll

I've swam a couple of times this year. I came out of my boat in the pool below Soc-em-dog. The other time was on Clear Creek in the Emory Obed. On another note, if the L'edge had never been built Louie and Phil would not have had a heated exchange on this forum about that boat, resulting in Louie ge...

Learning to Roll OC-1

I got my first instruction from a C-boater at a weekly rolling practice held by a local canoe club during the summer of 1985. I practiced in a Mohawk Scamp until I felt comfortable rolling on the Nantahala or Chattooga. The next year I got some pointers from Nolan Whitesell on the Ocoee. It was ther...

I paddle in the SE US in a Caption, Whitesell or Encore

To me big water starts at bankfull on the Chattooga around 3 ft. or LRC at 12". Flood is the Chattooga at 6 ft and flashing. My measure of big water doesn't change whether i'm in the short or long barge :) A run in flood has big debris floating by like logs, dead animals, stairs or decks, big propan...

Lower Amicalola

Nice video of Edge of the World and Split Rock! Looked like a good level. Was it between 1.5 and 2 ft? I see the log on the left below the second ledge of EOTW has washed out. That log made the left line that Stu and Trey took pretty sketchy, especially if you got sideways. It would be hard not to b...

First Royalex canoe

I heard the Warsaw Rocket was the first Royalex canoe. Bob Lantz bought hulls from Warsaw to make his first canoes, before he made the OCA.

In late 80's Bluehole made a experimental PE canoe. Bob brought it to the Ocoee one summer for folks to try out. I heard it was fairly heavy - no surprise there.

Honda Pilot

I traded my 1996 Isuzu Rodeo 4X4 with 220K miles on a 2WD Honda Pilot this weekend and got $3500 with cash for clunkers :D. Like everyone wanting to carry longer boats I looked for the best possible rack arrangement. I considered the Highlander, but didn't like the rear hatch. I've got two 66" bars ...

Bull Sluice videos

Great videos of Bull Sluice! The OC-2 run was great! Not often do you see a tandem team run the double drop that well.

Thanks Kimmie!

My first guess is a Mohawk Challenger. It has the plastic end decks Mohawk used in the late 80's.

OC only too

I've been in a kayak no more than twice in 28 years. Never paddled one more than a few minutes at a time. Just didn't appeal to me at all. Your poll needs a "Only paddle open boat" check box.
