Borrow a C1 first
I would suggest borrowing a C1 for a few hours before going to the trouble of outfitting a kayak for C1, just to be sure you can tolerate the low kneel position. Years and years ago I made the transition from flatwater canoing to whitewater OC1 to whitewater K1 and I still paddle canoes and kayaks o...

Impulse
I have a Dagger Impulse that I have set up primarily as a whitewater tripping canoe pulled in about 1 3/4 inches. It did make cross strokes easier and seemed to improve speed and tracking a bit I presume by decreasing rocker and increasing waterline length.

mutant
Second that. I can't paddle C1, but I thought the Mutant to be an excellent creek kayak.

too dam old?
I'm 55. First paddled a canoe when Dwight D Eisenhower was President. Don't seem to have learned much since.

Second the Dagger Encore and Dagger Caption. The Dagger Caper has very similar dimensions to the Caption, and was actually brought out as Dagger's first solo WW OC1. It would work well if you can find one. The Genesis was marketed as a large person's Encore, but was nothing like it. I didn't like it...

Upstream or downstream? It's not clear from the action sequence shots.

fair price
For a Caption in good condition, with outfitting that is a good price especially if it has decent bags included. Triple saddles are expensive and create a long "water dam" that potentially makes the boat difficult to roll and/or control when full of water. I would look at the system made by North Wa...

Caption Impulse and Viper
Well, I own an Impulse and a Dagger Caper, which has very similar dimesions to a Caption, and I have owned a Mohawk Viper 12. Furthermore, I am almost exactly your size. You don't mention whether your friend has a Viper 12 or 11. If it just says "Viper" on it, it's a 12. At your size you could go wi...

ME
Kaz, Is the boat still available? If yes, I may be interested. I will probably be bringing you an Ocoee for a "gunnel job" next month, and if you still have it, will look at it then.

At 214lbs if you were interested in a Viper, I would go with the Viper 12. It would be a little faster and a bit edgier. The Mohawk Shaman is about the same price new, and would carry your weight well. The MR Outrage X would also handle your weight if the regular Outrage feels too small. I would try...

reoutfitting
Assuming that the "saddle" is a foam pedestal I would guess that it has been glued in with contact cement. If so, I would use a thin paint scraper or putty knife to get under the pedestal and carefully work it off. Make sure you are not getting under the inner vinyl coat of the Royalex as you do thi...

Viper 12
It has been quite a few years now, but I owned a Viper 12 and loved it. I wouldn't call it fast, but it was quick to accelerate and seemed to have better glide than the Viper 11. I briefly paddled a Spark recently and it reminded me of the Viper somewhat. The Viper is distinctly edgier, though, and ...
