Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

The Encore, Man I love those boats. I've paddled thousands of miles in them, easy. It used to be my preferred guide boat. I bought one in 98 that I found in the back warehouse of a paddle shop in Redding, CA. Bright red. It had been made in 88, and had never been outfitted, never been in the water. ...

Re: New boat ready for glass

Well, the boat wasn't 'completed'...it was finished enough for me to test it out. I am pretty pleased with it. Now its being sanded down-re-glassed, sanded, sanded, sanded...I'm trying to get it ready to pop a mold off of it. I also had to make a 100 mile move, I'm helping some family members also m...

Re: do I need a center thwart?

Since Royalex is dead, I would say that anything you can do to stiffen up the boat, and perhaps extend its life, would be a good idea. That being said, I would recommend against putting thwarts in places where they will possibly shatter and stab you, or help pin you in the boat. You could always put...

If it's Mr. Rucker you are thinking of, its spelled 'Neil', and yeah, he does say that :D . If the run is too easy, there are always ways to make it harder! AND ITS RAINING! It's been raining for 2 days and looks like its going to rain for two more! Woo Hoo baby!! We may not be doomed yet! 8)

Cascade C-1 in NorCAL 300.00

Boat is in very good shape considering its age. Comes with float bags and 2 spray skirts, one Medium, one XL. Factory outfitting. I bought this boat many years ago in the assumption I would use it, and I've only paddled it 3 or 4 times. Clearly I don't need it, so its time to pass it along to someon...

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.

I was just teasing our eastern brethren. I am well aware they have a good deal more going on than we do out west. Exactly WHY this should (still) be I'm not sure...but it is. California, in particular, should be home to tens of thousands more boaters with all the whitewater available...but we're not...

Re: boat for my dog and me

I've only taken the dog out a few times, but one thing I noticed is that having a stable boat seems to help the dog relax and not move around so much. I had some good success with a 40-50 lb. dog in class I and II in a Sunburst. I moved the saddle back a bit so I had a nice large compartment between...

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.

I've driven along the Eel many times when I was working over there, but never ran it. A good friend said there was a nice class II run on the lower section...he was unspecific as to precisely where ;) I was never that interested when I had the Upper Sac, Trinity, and many others much closer.

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.

As to the runs, The Klamath is Dam-Controlled, so all of those runs are available all year long. Its a longer drive to get there, but in some ways its actually way more fun than the Trinity. For one thing, the Klamath is like 70 degrees in the summer-time (top-feed dam) so you don't need any cold-wa...

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.

The SF American is probably going to be running, and that's about all I paddle anyways, because there is not much Class 2-3 or Class 3-4 in California, mostly CLass 4-5. Meh. You're correct, except for The Upper Sacramento, Sims to Lamoine The Upper Sacramento, Box Canyon The Happy Camp run on the ...

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would advise you not to panic...yet. It is, after all, only January here on the West Coast. I can recall quite a few years where we got bailed out by some heavy-duty stuff in the late winter and the springtime. February is still to come, and we may yet get hammed by the wet s...

Re: Beowulf: on-water review and pics

ADDENDUM: Moved the pedestal forward a little more than an inch. Took the boat back to the water. NOW it behaves like it should. Boat is super-responsive, carves, has some crazy acceleration...this is what I had in mind when I started. Tracking is now a bit mediocre...the only reason it was tracking...
