Re: Standardizing Measurements

Photos are worth a thousand words, but I often find that canoe manufacturers don't use them enough. Give me various shots of the canoe on a flat surface from different angles and I'll see the rocker. A company like Mohawk could even do side-by-side comparisons of its different boats to show which h...

Re: tandem oc2 tips anyone

John Coraor: "It's possible for a petite 5'2" paddler to man the stern behind a 6'4" middle linebacker, but put them in a close cockpit C-2 or OC-2 and it won't take long for that tandem team to steer straight into trouble." John, did you ever see Hoppy and Mary Eager race c-2? Hoppy was near 6' 5"...

Re: tandem oc2 tips anyone

There are as many different styles of paddling tandem as there are tandem paddling teams, so the bottom line is that you do what works for you and your partner of the moment. However, in the rarely seen ideal world of a tandem team with equal power, skill, and experience there is a reason why the bo...

Re: Option boating in AZ

Choosing where you want to be on the wave makes a difference as well. There were a couple of shots in the video where you descended chutes that ended in a "V" with a wave at the downstream point and curlers rolling/breaking upstream all along the sides of the "V." In a situation like that, hitting t...

Re: Boat of the Week - Hahn

A Sweet-Hahn was the first C-1 that I paddled; however, I didn't paddle it for long. As I primarily paddled slalom C-2 at the time (probably a Paramax II at that point), I actually missed the flat-bottom, hard chines, and edginess (all of which the Hahn didn't have) and moved quickly into an Ultrama...

Re: adhesive for nylon

Brendan: If there isn't a sewing machine in the house, then I would go with adhesives. You'll probably pay through the nose for someone else to sew it. I had just assumed that you had a machine available. However, I have to confess that I grew up using my mom's sewing machine and now use an even old...

Re: Paddle repair question

Boatbuster: I'll second ezwater's suggestion of S-glass as a better repair material for your situation. Lacking S-glass, I would opt for E-glass before using either kevlar or nylon. I'll also second Nick's suggestion of Sweet Composites as a supplier of all of the above, plus dynel in both cord and ...

Re: adhesive for nylon

Brendan: If you really want to avoid sewing the bungee sleeve, then take your pick of the advice offered above. However, sewing a bungee sleeve would take about 5 minutes on a sewing machine and the result would probably hold better than any of the adhesives noted above. On more general issues of Ny...

Re: Paddle repair question

When you say that "the repair broke off along the tip" you give the impression that you may not have extended the area of your repair far enough onto solid areas of the paddle in order for it to be sound. However, you might want to post a photo or two so people could better understand the nature of ...

Re: Why Grummans Rock... My story and Your thoughts please.

I've still got my father's 17' Grumman (lake keel), which was used on many a family outing, including some tentative ventures onto whitewater. Mostly it was used for various trips in the Adirondacks, both with the family and with our local Boy Scout troop. Great memories!!!

Re: Radical new boat material (the Grumman thread)

Wish I could remember the name of the guidebook to verify this, but I've seen a picture of a guy paddling a Grumman canoe down the Upper Yough--most likely back in the 70's. I think the rapid was Meat Cleaver. Any poster with a few more gray hairs than me can remember days like that. Grumman was th...

Re: k/c 1 remeber that dude

The one I recall was in a slalom race. It was either Bob Robison or Billy Hearn. You know, "That" crowd. 8) KNeal: I believe you're thinking of Ron Lugbill, Jon's older brother and a gold medalist in C-1 Team in 1981. Ron competed as a K-1 in the early 80s at a few slalom races while kneeling (as i...
