Re: Long Boating

On a number of occasions, for a number of different reasons, I have paddled an Old Town Tripper solo in whitewater. I've always found it more fun than one would expect. Especially, unloaded...but, still, pretty fun with gear. Those boats draw so little water, empty and solo, they all kinds of spin. ...

Re: So, will one of these Millbrook boats work for my trip?

Your trip is kind of a mini-Kruger trip. He logged several tens-of-thousands of miles. I suspect he had plenty of time to think about what would make the ultimate tripping boat. The Kruger design was molded by several companies. They are partly-decked 17' canoes which are generally paddled with a be...

Re: Mad River Canoe ID Help #MAD H2376 M84E

The MR boat history which I have indicates they made a 17' Royalex Explorer from '81 to '84. It certainly looks like that is what you have.

I have also had some of my canoes end up full of other people's soil and flowers.

Re: New to me New Wave Grokshark C2

Your reading of the lay-up description is correct: glass on the outside of the boat. I would call it a somewhat-economy river-running lay-up. No Kevlar in the deck, and only two in the hull, gets it the "somewhat-economy." I have only a guess as to what weight fabric they were using. My guess is 5 o...

Re: Multiday Rigging

The OP needs to come back and tell us: whitewater or flat.

If it's flatwater tripping...30 days, no problem, with the right boat.

Re: Multiday Rigging

I have done 5-day trips in 13'x 70cm solo boats. I go with two 3,000 ci bags...one right in front of my knees, one just behind the toes. As the previous poster suggested, you want d-rings to hold your gear bags down, firmly, against the bottom of the boat. No flop. I would think 14 days would be pre...

Yup. It is not like buying a book.

Come to Maine, paddle the Kennebec and West Branch...pick up boat. Simple.

Re: paddle shaft reinforcement question

For shafts, the answer for me is Dynel sleeve. http://sweetcomposites.com/Polyester.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Slip it on, tape the ends down, soak well with epoxy resin, after hard sand it to remove fuzz. Easy...and lasts nearly forever. I think Walbridge has a short descri...

Re: Twister Vs. Edge Thoughts from...

Never paddled a 15' Edge. A very uncommon boat at races I've been at. The boat I would suggest is the Howler. Kaz makes them, and Mad River made them for a few years in Royalex. A really fine boat for heavier paddlers. A close second would be the Prowler. A Prowler is +/- a Howler paddled backwards ...

Re: Twister Vs. Edge Thoughts from the riff-raff

I raced a Twister for a while at something in the 210 to 230# range. I was running it with a 7.75" seat height. I concluded it was too skinny for me at my weight (spin and stability issues). Getting the seat down well below my level would help stability. But, the hull was designed for people well un...

would an ocoee suit someone that weighs in around 230+ and be faster than an octane 91? i assume that you would loose a lot of the benefits of an ocoee with my large arse!!! am i right? d A vast array of body types paddle Ocoees.
