Bell Prodigy X: Fast. Stable. Dry. Maneuverable. Easy to roll. Expensive (but worth it). I recently got down to 170# from 215, but when I ordered a replacement for my well-used Prodigy X, I ordered another X. I might now be in the range of the regular Prodigy, but the X handles so well, and is so da...

Thanksgiving Weekend: ROAAADDDddddd TRIP anyone?
I'm thinking of looking for some boatable Class III or III/IV water within the triangle of New River Gorge(SW), Maury River(SE), and Stonycreek River(NE), (look on the map for Beckley, WV, Lexington, VA, and Johnstown, PA). That includes the headwaters of the James and the Potomac, nearly all of the...

J, you were there?
I didunt see you. 'Course, I don't spend much time with the "shop 'til you drop" crowd. I mostly just get on the river and paddle. Nice to hear you'n the girls had a good shopping spree!
Put me on yer mailing list if you put together that "Yankee-land" trip yer thinking about.

@kayakusa: If I owned a Homes I would cut some decent channel (1" high, 4" wide) through the bottom of the saddle somewhere in the middle of the boat to enable that waterflow. Just a thought. When I have done this I have cut an arch, as a semicircle with a 3" radius or so. The arch is a very stong ...

Go to the Russell Fork.
The Nanny is always running and the New is often at a boatable level. The Russell for is far enough away that it is less common that you can go there in the assurance of finding a decent water level.
Cat and I will be there with the SRVCC.

Yep.
Factory-outfitted as a C-1 by Dagger (I ordered it without ever having had the opportunity to test-drive a Gradient C-1). Worst boat I ever owned. Not even the kayakers liked the Gradient, but I was a Dagger loyalist at the time (little dreaming the %$^@# Dagger Canoe Company was gonna discontinue t...

Favorite canoe
I'm 5'11", 175#. Peaked at Bottom Moose (NE), Upper Yough, Upper Gauley (Mid-Atlantic), Watauga & Section IV (SE), Shoshone Gorge & Foxton (Rockies), but will do most of those now only at ELF; so nowdays I'm calling myself a Class III paddler. Prefer anything with low volume and high(ish) gradient. ...

Best whitewater canoe I have ever owned.
I used to paddle a Rival for big water and an Ocoee for technical water. Now I use the Prodigy X for everything. It is fast, dry, and maneuverable. I've never used it on anything tighter than the Uper Gauley at 600 cfs or Chatooga IV at 1.2', but it is absolutely maneuverable enough for those situat...

Re: yardwork
Yeh, for the last three weeks I had this weekend scheduled for yard work. Then I broke my boat the previous weekend, and suddenly I had a new priority!

And on the 6th day, it rose from the dead!
I have gone boating 6 of the last 7 weekends, despite my intention to boat only on alternate weekends as a fuel economy measure, and on top of that I had a bad cold all of last week, so I stayed home for the weekend and spent all day Saturday chandling boats. First I finished outfitting my new boat,...

Which boat?
Well, the Impulse and the Caption will both be far easier to learn on; the Viper is a lot more twitchy. The Impulse was designed as a user-friendly, low-performance beginner's canoe. The Caption is the only one you will be able to use as a tandem boat. The Viper is the one that can take your skills ...

And when you get that drysuit...
...be sure to order (A) latex or neoprene footies. Latex gaskets cut off the circulation to the feet, and they get really, really cold without all that warm blood flowing through them, and (b) a "relief zipper", because without one, it is such a pain to take a leak (and you get so cold doing so) tha...
