Re: Musings on why I still C1
I know this is unthinkable for some, but I am switching between an open canoe and a kayak these days. There are runs I did in a C-1 in the past that I’ll only do in a kayak in the future. The work involved in open boating isn’t just in the carrying and dumping, just maneuvering the boat that’s more ...

Re: Musings on why I still C1
C1ing demands quicker reactions and greater flexibility whereas open canoe requires greater strength. I don’t find either one more comfortable than the other, but I use a similar pedestal height in both. I’m the opposite of you in that I like the feel of riding the waves in an open canoe versus havi...

Re: Grand Canyon solo
From second hand info, Doug's solar panels are for recharging camera and pump batteries. I'm most impressed with the length of time Doug plans to be in the canyon. Kayak self-support trips seem to go ten days long. I'm wondering if Doug's getting resupplied at Phantom or if he's going to be losing w...

Re: Grand Canyon solo
I don’t know Doug well, but my impression is that he won’t be sharing much about his trip. It’s his partner who announced the start and took the photos. I’ll pass along what I find out, but regardless it’ll likely be in a month after he finishes. Here’s another passion of his: http://www.spiritofthe...

Grand Canyon solo
Maybe a canoeing milestone? Doug Green launched at 1:30pm on Wednesday (10/17/2012). What a profound experience to witness him finally living his dream--he's wanted this for 40 years, waited forever for the permit, endured the spider bite setback and three shoulder surgeries--I am so proud, inspired...

Re: who sells bulkhead saddles?
It'd be useful to have a few measurements to compare different saddles.
I found Blackfly's to be snug which is useful since it's easier to cut than add. I'm 5'8", 30" inseam and have large thighs.
The saddle is 8" tall at it's lowest point.

Re: To glue or not
The saddle might fail around the thwarts or dowel if not glued to the hull.

Re: To glue or not
I used a Perception saddle in my first WW canoe. The front of the bulkhead will be wedged between sidewall foam and knee pads/blocks like you are suggesting. If the saddle stays put under use without gluing, I'll likely not be gluing it to the hull. You brought up more stress on the hull with glue; ...

To glue or not
I’m installing a bulkhead into an ABS Zoom. As the picture shows I’ve slotted the thwarts into the top of the saddle. I’m also adding a dowel dropping from the rear thwart into the saddle. Does the bottom of the saddle need to be glued to the hull? For PE boats the glue keeps grit from accumulating ...

Re: who sells bulkhead saddles?
I just bought an OC bulkhead from Blackfly that's looking like it'll work well in my Zoom. I'll need to make slots for the thwarts in the top. NOC had an Esquif this year, so you could probably work with a distributor to get one from them. Mohawk is also selling one which wasn't on their website the...

I plan to bring a Perception OC saddle to GAF if someone would want it.

Re: Upper Nantahala 9/29-30
A large vehicle and shuttle bunny would be ideal. It might be a good thing to have a traffic jam on the road instead of the river.

NOC's trying to keep track of numbers to run shuttles:
