height of gunwales and width of boat (esp @ gunwales) are going to be the main concerns for a kid's boat. lightweight and stable would be tertiary concerns.
Bob Wiggins keeps talking about putting together a kids boat based on his experience canoeing as a youngster.

Carved this with a pocket knife. AB edge upgrade, Oak dowel. Fun project for a lazy Skype date.

Re: Prelude Vs. L'Edge
These are excellent responses. The weight difference cannot be overstated. The Prelude is among the lightest PE designs, a full 15 lbs lighter than a l'edge. Huge rocker, very responsive, it *will* demand that you be on your game and learn to throw the right stroke at the right time. Be comfortable ...

Re: Boat Needs a Lift to OC Nationals
Is anyone coming from as far as Massachusetts or New England? I am looking to bring a boat down from that region.
(sorry to jack the thread; THANKS!)

Re: Shacho reviews
can someone talk about the chines and carving? How she slides into eddies or gets tripped up in cross currents? Would you compare the boat's turning performance to an Outrage? Ocoee? Det? Probe? What about the response time moving from edge to edge? (some people call this tippyness :) Clearly it's n...

Re: Shacho reviews
Please! (I'm thinking shorter/lighter viper 11 with softer chines that still turns briskly and glides fast?) and drier ends? let us know, yall. I am also interested in how the heavy layup option realistically holds up to delicate rockslides and boofs. and what's up with the extreme tumblehome? inqui...

Re: Probe 13 into an OC2 possible?
Thanks for posting the nitro outfitting pics. I am fascinated that you like it tandem. I paddled one recently and barely liked it solo. I'd like a more full report about that boat. As for the Ocoee, I have been meaning to provide pics, a review and details on the double-bulkhead/triple saddle I buil...

Re: Probe 13 into an OC2 possible?
As a Probe paddler, you know that either the 13or14 has huge performance gains over the XL series. The Probe 14 is a very capable boat. Remember that the 13 is really the old 12 (12'8") and they cut all of that length out of the middle where the volume to float you is. I think you will be too heavy ...

Sounds good, y'all.
I feel bad I didn't make it up there to represent the tandem ethos. But it sounds like you are doing a good job keepin' it classy.

Re: Best kids Canoe?
Saw a Splash @ ARF this year. I was impressed with it. As to banging rocks, etc: I knocked on it with my fist and it seemed bomber. The fella said it was floatplane pontoon technology. I wouldn't be concerned about wear and abuse from a paddler of tiny weight--even over rocks or drifting downstream ...

Re: Big drops in an Ion?
The Upper Tellico is
a) not that hard because all the drops are so clean.
b) probably the best training ground for boofing a canoe.
meatgrinder/jarrods knee are noticeably harder and more continuous than the ledges above. Have Fun!
