Werner et al

Werner's are probably not the best to start out with (expensive) but I find mine wears pretty well on west coast gravel bars and boulder gardens. My carbon Bandit works well although I would prefer a blade that has a little more flex. I still list the Werner in my top three: Waterstick, which was su...

A consensus !

all I can say is... I agree. At 205lb and 5'6" I had went from Impulse- Probe 12- Viper 11 and eventually- Occoee. Moved out of the Impulse quickly. Probe was next, stable, stood up to my intermediate skill learning, could have pushed it further. Viper 11 next, beat me up for a long time, till I mas...

Re: Looking for solutions for reinforcing a Prelude's hull

John & Matt in Boise use Marine goop to hold abs 1/8 sheets in place as bow plates. They mold them with a heat gun to achieve good fit
i would mold the plate so that it extends up the sidewall interior to distribute the pressure and goop it in place.

Re: Sacramento region

Sorry for the thread steal. It's getting really dry out here on the West coast, not much left to do than navel gaze.

Clubs

I can relate to johnd's thoughts. Clubs can be conservative and cliquey and even occasionally downright hazardous due to their antiquated safety ideas but, overall, they serve a good purpose. They get you on the water initially and expand your horizon to what is possible, although what is possible m...

kevlar limits propogation

I have a kevlar Mohawk Viper 11, no gel coat, and come to the opinion that damage seems to stay "local" and is easily repaired.

How is it that kevlar limits propagation?

Thin out the bracing?

This summer a good instructor made the same comment to me; in short, quit over bracing, paddle forward. Kinda took me aback at the moment but, over time, I agreed. There was nothing wrong with my act of bracing but it was capping, limiting, my choices; sort of a nice safe dead end. The context/set u...

Slalom in an Octane 92

Ran a canoe slalom course in a Octane 92 just for the craziness of it. I was in the backseat, spent most of my time looking around, trying to see the gates.
We came in 2nd last, just ahead of a floating stick

C'mon Harry, I can't believe you won't try and "rescue" it like you did with the coleman trailer.

'shooting" G flex

I was pleased with the results of injection G Flex into a friends Zoom recently. There was an obvious blister to deal with so using a small drill bit I made two holes on each side of the blister drilling at a shallow angle. I used a small stainless steel wile (or anything similar) to explore the hol...

Attaching saddles to thwarts

I've had thwarts break from bottom pressure being transferred up thru the seat. (hitting a rock) Both wooden and metal tube have broken. My Occoee (2nd owner) has a very definite wear pattern on the hull, right in front of the seat base glue down. The effect is not just vinyl wear, there is a defini...

Buy a....

Buy a full size Capilano beanie from MEC for $29. Dan McG and I have been tuning up our kayak rolls in winter water at the Seymour, wearing standard half size beanies. One day I bought a MEC full size "Capilano" beanie, just to deal with the ice cream headaches from repeated cold water rolls. Best $...

Soar

"Soar" makes a popular model. IC's are gaining popularity for tripping in Canadian north as several can be stored inside a Twin Otter, cutting flight costs. Pretty forgiving, carry lots of gear, but performance sucks. Rig one with a transom, stick a 2 horse outboard on it, and then tow several more,...
