Re: S T R E T C H I N G

I was in my late 40's when I decided to lower the saddle and be a C1r. It took a year to train my knees to accept the tighter confines of the cockpit. I did not do any stretching of note. I will say from experience that you should do more walking and biking to keep your knees strong. I had major swe...

Re: Under rated boats...

Oh, Mkoeppe, I just noticed the stern paddler is missing their paddle in swimmers. What a feat.

Re: Under rated boats...

A picture of a Descender would be nice.

As for the Amoeba, I don't think very many were made. I only know of two, one in Glen Falls and the other in Concord NH. You could contact Millbrook boats and see if Kaz knows of any others, and he would know.

Re: Under rated boats...

Oh, so much fun can be had in a C2.
The Gemini is a nice looking boat. Sharpe edged without much vertical chine.

Re: South Eastern First Descents, Overflow, etc.

P_H Were C1s more popular with crazy people No, they were more readily available. The canoe was the most prevalent boat at the time. There was a culture of canoeing then that is gone now. Canoe clubs were popular and the crazy among them moved on to more extreme craft that were being imported or cop...

Re: C1 & C2 Boating

well including an Acrobat Squirt C1 I could never fit my heels under the deck of a Bat boat. The Viper C1 is the closest and I think that hull was taken from a cudamax. The Viper has been raved about on this forum well back 14 years ago and at one armada I think six of us came with one to run the N...

Re: C1 & C2 Boating

P_H, If you're not too far from NW Massachusetts the Deerfield river near Charlemont MA has regular weekly releaseses. There are two sections, the Monroe (Dryway) section is class III-IV and the Fife Brook section is class II with a class III option at the take out. Fife link https://www.safewaters....

Re: C1 & C2 Boating

MK, That's a great price for a New C1. I'm sure having two built at once helped. If Class V could sustain production near this price level I don't see why the Atom could not see a resurgence in the C1 market. It really has a nice looking profile that the two tone deck/hull highlights. It's not a pla...

Are you thinking of the river banks near Bryson City NC?
Just six? There must be 100's.

Re: Buying Advice

Tony, You have a couple things you have to further identify. What does the next level mean? Are there other open boaters that you can learn paddle technique from or are you going to have to self educate? The 20/20's and Blackfly's are very stable boats that allow you to do more difficult runs becaus...

Re: Gluing Minicell to Royalex

Weldwood Contact Cement in the red can is the best for gluing minicel to the deck. A 4" putty knife with corners rounded off with a file is one tool that I've used to lift installed minicel. I've seen some plastic scrapers that might work. Removing minicel if you want to re-use the piece is tedious ...

Re: Varathane or Varnish for Flatwater Canoe canoe?

I agree with oiling the gunwales. I've made my own that has worked fine for the annual ritual. Equal parts satin urethane, boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Brush on and rub and wipe off with a cloth. Just remember to put the cloth in a metal can afterwards as the evaporative process generates enou...

Re: Under rated boats...

I'll throw in the Arguemax C2 as an un-rated boat. There are so few of these around but it was my first C2 experience and I was hooked. Only paddled it a few times as my partner and I live 600 miles apart, but the hard chines made it very predictable. nb002.resized.jpg nb010.resized.jpg This was at ...

Re: C1 & C2 Boating

wildwater I tried a Hornet a few times over the years. It is nice and fast but I could never get comfortable in it. The rounded hull tends to tighten the knees at the spread I like so either i have to raise the saddle or paddle for shorter periods. The three C1's I now have all have rather flat hull...

Re: C1 & C2 Boating

Mike,
Did you have a Viper built for you? I remember you had cracked your original at Memorial Rock on the Savage. I still have mine but it only gets out on WW a couple times a year now.
That boat is just so much fun to paddle till my knees say no more.
