Re: Rolling a Blackfly
Hmm -- I'd forgotten this thread! Update! During Blackfly's recent Demo tour in the Pacific NorthWest, I got to try a Delta. Despite sloppy outfitting (it's about my little legs), I scored a 96% roll the first time! Honest! -- As Cheeks is my witness! While I'd love to credit improved skills, other ...

Re: Blackfly Canoe Demos in British Columbia, Canada
What a rush it was to meet, and paddle with, Team Blackfly (y'all) yesterday, on the Cow. 13 Island boaters were on hand to sample The Best of Blackfly, and the smiles were widespread. Personally, I'm torn between buying an Option, an Octane 85, an Octane 92, or a Delta. Or any two, three, or four o...

Re: Burn 3 conversion
. . . Generally, I think the boat works well as a C1. . . Thanks, whistlepig. Don't sell yourself short -- I'd still love to hear your impressions, even lacking comparisons: edges grabby? carves on a wave? primary stability? secondary stability? tracks well? maneuverable? rollability? punches waves...

Burn 3 conversion
The Pyranha Burn has always received top marks as a C-1 conversion. But the Burn design has been tweaked, at least twice. I believe the current offering is, like, Mark 3 (?) The current ads and reviews suggest "more river-runner, less creeker", sharp chines, better tracking but maybe less maneuverab...

Re: Cheapest canoe ship from MA to Alberta!
What Sir Adam said. Personally, I've had good luck with Canada Customs in recent years. As long as you have an honest receipt, and stay out of country for the minimum 48 hours, they may allow you to exceed the exemption limit by quite a bit. Another shipping option I researched (though never actuall...

Re: PFD types and rolling
. . .Here's the furtrapper hand rolling an option . . . Ha! I'm guessing I speak for the rest of us mere mortals when I suggest that, when trying to master the elusive roll, we need all the help we can get -- from equipment and otherwise! (Has anyone tried fastening helium balloons to their. . . ?)...

Re: PFD types and rolling
Great question, Pea Pod. From much practice in the pool, with some video feedback, I agree that bulky panels on the front of PFDs do prevent a low tuck to the front deck on the finish of the roll. Part of the issue is the configuration of foam on the front of bulkhead saddles. I've had minor success...

. . . So folks that got to paddle the new Silver Birch and Big Dog- can you kindly share some feedback Thanks for kicking this off, Yukon -- I was just about to ask the same question! Wendy, thanks for the comments. Exactly the sort of info we'd all like to hear. I like the comments comparing the n...

Re: Interesting Question from a Long Time Paddling Friend
. . . I also started in the 80s, paddling open boats for close to 20 years. Then I got busy . . . Me too. Paddled in the '80s; local rivers, Arctic trips; took courses, taught courses; then, in the '90s, watched buddies lose interest, move away, take up mud-pies, die. . . ; retired, relocated, dust...

Prefer solid hull, but outfitting isn't important.

Re: Question for Blackfly Option Owners
. . . designs have changed that much as far as stability, dryness and confidence, then yeah, I guess should keep up with the Jones and take a serious look at L'Edges, Options and Octanes . . . I'm chubby enough, thank you. I'd say 'yes' to stability, dryness, and confidence, in either the Opt...

Re: Question for Blackfly Option Owners
. . .sounds like the Option can handle 225 OK. If not, the L'Edge seems to. . . Pat, I went from an Ocoee to a L'Edge to an Option, as you know, (and now back to a L'Edge Lite). If the loonie ever goes back up, I may yet pick up another Option. But I'm considerably lighter than you. WCK has some L'...

Re: Jackson Karma L vs River Elf Storm Chaser M - help me pi
. . . too chunky, feels like it squats no matter the saddle position, no faster turning than Gyramax and does not like to lean to turn - wallowing would be a good description for it, not remotely crisp . . . Well, yes, but possibly that's the nature of current WW river-runners or creekers. They're ...
