Re: Flotation Question

To detailify that a bit about PU.. PVC needs plasticizers to make it pliable, that seep out of the plastic which over time reduces their flexibility, which leads to delamination, especially the well-know "crease spot" delamination in canoe bags. PU is more flexible, more abrasion resistant and resis...

Re: Flotation Question

The "sensitivity to weather" doesn't have anything to do with how thick or thin the fabric is. If the coating is good and well adjusted to the fabric's properties, which is the case with the only pair of Voyageur (now harmony) Airbags I know of, they will withstand the same amount of pressure from h...

Re: Pumps

In return, people start talking about how many gallons of water their boats keep in them and how many gal/min their pumps pump. Good I don't have one.. :D

Re: my high tech bicycle

Why expensive.. a 0.60mm titanium sheet 405 x 1000 mm costs around 50 EUR.. so you should get away with around 400 EUR Material cost for a small creek boat type. Weight of one sheet is 1,10 kg so your finished hull would have around 8 kg to it. add 4 kg of gunwale (or build integral gunwales, made o...

Re: Big Dog OC1 Force

I bought a used one fitted with foam, pulled it apart completely and reoutfitted it with a bulkhead, sidewall foam and thwarts very similar to what is on the posted picture, just that I did a one-piece bulkhead instead of fumbling pieces into the side of it, which was probably a bit harder to get in...

Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

Well, yeah, a good instructor is worth his or her weight in gold. Probably not a coincidence that the page with Sammers' info is the same that my coaches' dates are on.. :D But he's also an IT and not just an I so I guess that's also making somewhat of a difference. Haven't yet experienced instructi...

Re: Idaho Boater seeking Canoe Advice

I can second Ian on the Ocoee sentiment.. regarding the surfing, the near as fast I don't know but it never occured to me why it would be drier. Mind you, I'm paddling at 180+ pounds body weight so some boats are wetter for me than others. If you can get one of the Royalite or Light layup Ocoees tha...

Re: ABS Royalex repair

warm is good, but you want to have it so that the acetone doesnt immediately evaporate, but has some time to soften the underlying ABS as well.. Work in thin layers - then it will evaporate very fast! But it also won't evaporate on the surface first, making it harder for the underlying acetone to es...

Re: What do you want to see in the future?

Ha, working on a wing saddle here.. we can make it a race ;D - No really, I think it's a good idea, ratchets are pretty much the way to go and easy to use so yeah, I'd obviously like to see that. But it's aso relatively simple! - "Material" is the hardest question to answer and probably the one that...

Hi Idahodawg, great that you're wanting to go open.. as a suggestion, may I cite an earlier post.. "Seems like there are tons of good options (for conversions) out there these days.. If you like to go the fast and nimble route, you might also consider a Spark or some Millbrook flavor of the same sty...

Re: Seat height and rolling --

Yeah, Bob.. that sounds like it really is good since rolling could be impossible.. unless your boat is a quake or C1 ;D If you picture the rolling motion of the upper body vs. the boat, the point where you "fold" over the gunwales indeed does make a difference.. physical, for the application of forc...

Re: Seat height and rolling --

The thought of a boat being easier to roll with a lower saddle apparently came from looking at the very last stage of the roll, the end, which is the only time during the dynamic rolling process where a lower saddle actually lowers your center of gravity and nay be helpful to "finish it". But it may...

Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

What I recently learned to give as a piece of advice to anyone asking themselves if they can proceed to harder WW.. is this. Also valuable if you like to judge wether you have a complete skill set and boat control or not. Well.. here goes: If you can hold your angle (Ferry, coming out of an eddy) an...
