Re: Seeking advice on solo ww canoe choice after 6 year hiat

Well... you just missed Open Canoe Slalom Nationals in Wausau, Wi. a few weeks ago. We will be having a 2-day rec-release this coming weekend and Pete, Dewey and I will probably hang a few gates again. Lot's of good OC'ers around the area... come get acquainted with the group. http://wausauwhitewate...

Re: Help choosing a versatile canoe

Hmmm, I see that my desire to do it all with one boat might be a bit overly-ambitious, so I'm going to change my strategy. I am more interested in going on flatwater trips than I am in paddling whitewater, so I would like a boat with stability and storage space. The ability to handle some light whi...

Re: Help choosing a versatile canoe

Good suggestions thus far... but honestly the O.P. didn't give enough information about the magical unicorn canoe's intended use. Remember... people used to run skin on frame canoes loaded with beaver pelts and canvas tents down whitewater long before the discovery of Aluminum. Step back in ti...

Re: Question of Length

Not that it's for everyone though. I can still understand and take pleasure in the paddling of a long canoe--enjoying its acceleration, glide, and the challenge of maneuvering a longer craft through difficult whitewater. But when it comes to deciding what I'll paddle on a particular day, it's alway...

Re: Question of Length

It's good that the L'Edge can do that, but my issue with short boats is that they are not proportional to my height and weight. Plus, I'm not experiencing any maneuvering disability in my 13' Millbrook. If I were a little, runty guy, or even just an average-sized guy, I would definitely get a littl...

Re: Question of Length

For what it's worth... the fastest and cleanest run at OC Nat's last week was by Dana Henry (of MR canoe fame) in a Esquif L'edge. Dana had never paddled an open canoe shorter than 11ft long prior to that. Eli Helbert (L'edge) and Jesse Cook (Option) also made the top ten fastest and cleanest runs w...

Re: something new is coming!

So... for REC canoes the rules read as follows. Article IV: SPECIFICATIONS OF CANOES A whitewater open canoe is a traditional open Canadian or Indian canoe which is a boat with ends pointed and higher than the middle, symmetrical side-to-side, and propelled with single bladed paddles. There will be ...
