Re: Whitewater Rating System - Is It OK As Is?

Ohioboater,

Those links were helpful. I was glad to see an open-ended scale for class 5 (5.0, 5.1, 5.2). I thought that idea had been abandoned.

So far (and it is early yet) it looks like C-boaters are OK or reluctantly content with the current system.

Re: Whitewater Rating System - Is It OK As Is?

The AWA seems content but the system remains in need of refinement. Altering the system is a daunting task - there is no authority to approach (outside the AWA or ACA perhaps). The task is not impossible however, and small, common-sense steps can be taken. The first step is to recognize there is roo...

Whitewater Rating System - Is It OK As Is?

A recent off-topic discussion on the difficulty of the Upper Yough has brought to light continuing problems with the whitewater rating system :x . The Upper Yough has been rated anything from class III to V! We can't make the rating system perfect...... but can we make it better and keep it relative...

Re: upper yough

I think Hat Clauer might have the record of most swims on the Upper Yough - something upwards of 14! I was in an eddy with Hat on the Tohickon and a boater charged into the eddy, looked at Hat and said "Hey, aren't you the guy who swam the entire Upper Yough? A bit of an exaggeration but Hat did hav...

Re: upper yough

The rating system is too subjective, the rating guidelines are indefinite and overly dependent on personal interpretation. I suppose that is just the way it must be. However, it takes some historical perspective, a lot of experience and a controlled ego to reasonably judge the difficulty of a river....

Re: upper yough

Agree with Jim. Well said.
P.S. Cheeks: The Upper Yough is Class 4+. Let's not downgrade it to Class 3+. Although I don't think that was your intention. This gets us into a very tough subject - rating rivers. Maybe we should try and re-address this hot topic once again :o .

Re: Nor cal open boaters? Resources??

Hello Jim,
Let us know when you are passing thru. Boating is a possibility (the Truckee levels ramp down in the Fall so it is a little uncertain).

Re: Nor cal open boaters? Resources??

Hello Elunopaddle, Hook up with 'Gold Country Paddlers'. It will cost you ~$15/year and you will be plugged into a large network of boaters. They are primarily kayakers, of course, but they welcome C-boaters. A good bunch of people. You will have a good idea of what is going on boating-wise in the C...

Re: Boat of the Week - Drakkar Wheelboy / BigBoy

Well.....I have a Wheelboy and I intend to hang onto it. It is a good park boat. Use it at the Reno Whitewater Park. Decent surfer too. It is comfortable and my knees are wide and low in the boat for great control and leverage - you can 'steer' the boat with your knees. Yes it IS heavy.

Re: Conversions and knee spread

I am 150 lbs, 5'8" with a 32" inseam. Manufacturer weight recommendations for kayaks don't necessarily apply to C1 conversions. Go bigger than you think 8) . Larger volume boats usually are a little wider. This pays off in terms of stability in bigger water (you have a higher center of gravity than ...

Re: Conversions and knee spread

The Pyranha Burn (large) is something you should seriously look at. It is 27 inches wide with a FLAT hull. This means you can get your knees LOW and WIDE. I agree that knee position low and wide is critical for boat control in a C1. I have a newly outfitted Burn (having just retired a Pyranha H3 255...

Re: Boat of the Week - Hydra Duet

You could count me in as a C2 partner, Jim, IF I still lived in the Northeast. I would really enjoy Class 4 in the Duet. I should have taken your crazy offer to run C-3 in my Duet on the Tohickon (my Duet is a 3-holer) many years ago  . I completely agree with Jim's assessment of the Duet's mer...
