Re: Rename the Stinkeye
I could think of a bunch of worse names... But since the term Stinkeye originated with surfers in Hawaii, it is pretty appropriate for a boat...

Re: recycled boats?!
Some of the plastics can be easily recycled - some cannot. Even for the relatively easy recycled plastics, the equipment needs - large scale grinders, compactors and massive heat would be cost prohibitive to most canoe manufacturers. Also the equipment required to separate coloring agents make it di...

In the early 90s, and Edged Silver Creek was about $150 new at NOC. Without Edging was about $110oldschoolyaker wrote:Has the plastic inlay tip. Not sure what wood is on the edges but shape is a whitewater paddle.

Re: New boat ready for glass
What kind of foam did you use for the ends? Polystyrene foam - ie:beadboard or extruded poly styrene will get eaten by the solvent in Polyester or Vinylester, but if the foam is urethane or minicell, then it will not get eaten and you are good to go.

Re: New boat ready for glass
So - big question - Do you intend to paddle this for a long time, or is this to test/tweak and then pop a mold? I ask, because to me it changes the level of effort at this point - and possibly the materials. For longevity, epoxy to bare wood will hold up much better and not delam, but Epoxy is 2 - 3...

Re: Silver Creek Paddle value?
Homer built a couple of different styles - Does it have hard edgings? Plastic inlaid tip or aluminum tip?

Re: New boat ready for glass
At this stage, saving resin shouldn't be your plan. While epoxy may bond to the lacquer, why take the chance. As Kaz said, sand the lacquer off, glass the whole thing - and go paddle. If you are happy with the boat, then you can worry about smoothing the ripples and getting that class A finish for m...

I think it looks like a Noah boat - Jape? or might be a Max IIKNeal wrote:Never thought of a c-1 slalom boat as a play boat.
Looks like a model just before the Fanatic.

Re: Royalex Grumman Canoe
I've paddled a few - years ago. Grumman was trying to compete with Blue Hole when the OCA ate Grumman's market share. As I recall they were about 20% less expensive than the OCA, but not nearly as good for whitewater.

I have a mitchell premier flat blade - 58" with rope edges and metal tip - I've had it for years, but it has rarely been used. It is basically new - I'd let it go for $70.00 + shipping

Re: What do you want to see in the future?
Materials - That's what we need - Something durable like royalex or tupperware, light as carbon, molds easily with inexpensive tooling (relatively) like Fiberglass. Both Royalex and tupperware require a very high tooling cost - limiting the number of designs available and the increasing time require...

Re: DYI kevlar canoe resources/books and info?
Charlie Walbridge's Boatbuilder's Manual is wonderful - Lots of great info from plug making, plug prep, mold making, mold prep and actual boat building. You may also want to look at some of the wood strip canoe construction books and videos available - Great way to build a plug that you can paddle t...

Re: Spark, Ignitor, or Shacho (i.e. which Kaz boat)?
IMHO, Composite boats are much easier to repair than tupperware or royalex boats. A little bit of sandpaper some masking tape, fiberglass or kevlar cloth, and some epoxy and you have everything you need. No plastic welders needed... A composite boat would probably not be the choice for boofing a roc...

Re: Shoulder?
I've definitely done more damage to my shoulders in a kayak than in an OC or C-1. The Duffek puts your shoulder in a very vulnerable position. I've popped my right shoulder out a couple of times - not fun - don't spend any time in a kayak anymore...
