Re: Drilling Composite
Applying blue masking tape first helps keep wood from tearing out. Has anyone tried it for gelcoat? Yes, Using blue tape works well. You can also use a countersink bit - simply reverse your drill and use the countersink bit to go through the gel coat. then switch to your drill bit. Remember to let ...

Re: Slalom C1 for heavy paddler & relative beginner (in slal
Frankly, I don't think you are going to find a 3.5M boat that is appropriate for your weight. My recommended boat for you is a full-cut Extrabat, Cudamax, Fanatic or similar design vintage. At your weight, any of those will still act like a low-volume stern contemporary design. I would stay away fr...

Re: Slalom C1 for heavy paddler & relative beginner (in slal
I've been there - trying to find a slalom boat that would fit a larger guy. Even at 200 lbs, most of the current boats are not really suited - seems like they are all designed for Mikal Martikan with an optimum weight around 170 lbs I paddle a full cut Vajda Scream - it does ok, but it is easy to te...

Actually it referred to the original Bluehole Open Canoe - Open Canoe Aluminum (ie: Aluminum Gunnels) - There was also OC-V for vinyl gunnels.Paddle Power wrote:please remind me, my mind is failing to recall what OCA stands for...

Re: What Fabric for Boat Repairs
ask her about dynel as a repair option, it's basically a cheaper kevlar that can't be called kevlar due to trade mark infringement. You mean TWARON, Not dynel. Dynel is a resin sponge, but does a great job as wear plates for heavy wear areas... TWARON is Aramid - just like kevlar... Typically it sh...

Re: The end of ESQUIF..... :(
Many years ago, I was able to paddle a composite Sunburst (very Long time ago) - VERY different boat from the Royalex version
Not only lighter, but definitely sharper edges and an all around more responsive boat.
Same held true for a composite ME vs a Royalex ME - Not even close to the same boat.

Re: Pépé - An extra wide slalom C1
Looks great. It would be interesting to see how it compares to some of the narrow premier boats out there for speed... Looks pretty fast in the gates and looks like it fits you perfectly.
Seems like the elite racers are all fairly small people - I've always had the same issue being "large boned"

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs
Unless you put some type of sealer and release agent on the plug, I doubt it will fall off when you flip - unless you are trying to do it wet. I would probably do 2 layers, let it set, flip, 2 layers on the deck, let cure, and repeat until all layers are on. A 5/4 hand laid boat is probably going to...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs
5 layers of carbon is quite a bit. it will be a pretty tough boat. and a but heavier than typical. A typical race layup would be more like 1 carbon, 2 carbon/kevlar hybrid for the hull and 1 carbon, 1 or 2 Carbon/Kevlar Hybrid. I think you will also find that carbon will have a rough surface. You ma...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs
Looks a lot better to me. The tail doesn't seem to be dragging as much, and it doesn't look like it hurt you at all getting the stern to catch to pivot.

There have been issues with certain colors of pigments being notorious for cracking in the past. Are your boats stored inside or outside?

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs
Looks good. Seems to have decent glide and turns pretty well for a tri-hull. Seems like your stern might be digging a hair. Can you slide forward a couple of inches in the cockpit? I'm thinking it might track a little better.
