Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

If someone is doing things you've never even contemplated doing before, sometimes your best course is to swallow your pride and ask them. I totally agree with this statement. Most good paddlers can spot someone doing bad technique but are afraid to give unsolicited advice. All you need to do is ask...

Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

I know people that take canoe paddling courses every year and they still paddle only class II and III whitewater. One guy said that almost every instructor has a different style of paddling so he's now confused. If you're happy taking clinics every year then by all means go spend your money and have...

Re: This old Outrage

Remove all of the outfitting, repair the canoe, then reinstall the outfitting 180° so that the stern is now the bow.

Re: Pumps

I remember when you were considered a wimp if you paddled a Royalex boat equiped with flotation and thigh straps. Real paddlers only paddled 17-foot Grumman aluminum canoes without any stinking flotation. Now we're starting over with the pump issue? Let's be real!

Re: old royalex

Use Toluene instead of Acetone or MEK. It is much gentler to the boat and actually removes contact cement much faster than Acetone or MEK.

Re: Vertige X as a solo for a 290 lb. paddler

I'm 170 lbs., owned a Vertige-X and paddled it a lot. It was my favorite canoe. The only reason that I sold it was that I'm in my mid 70s and the boat was getting too heavy to lift. I've used it on lots of creeks and small rivers as well as the Upper Yough, Gauley and the Grand Canyon. What I really...

Re: Saddle Removal

Use Toluene to soften the contact cement. It eats up the contact cement much faster than Acetone or MEK without destroying the boat. I just pour in some Toluene while working a long flexible blade under the saddle.

That's just about the nicest Grand Canyon video that I've ever seen. Thanks for posting. You people can really handle those tandem canoes.

Re: Boat of the Week - Hydra Duet

I absolutely love the Duet. I've taken 29 different ladies down the Dryway in one, most of who never paddled anything over class II or anything at all. I've also paddled it down the Upper Gauley, Upper Yough, Grand Canyon and countless other rivers and creeks. I've got two of them in my cellar all s...

Re: Options for younger developing Open Boaters

I started my grandson in a Hydra Duet then he switch to my Outrage. The Outrage is a very responsive boat without sharp chines which could easily flip him. He loves it and does excellent with it. Now I'm stuck with paddling an Encore unless he's not around.

Re: Substitutes for vinyl glue

I only use Vynabond for thigh strap anchors and red can contact cement for saddles and knee pads. The reason is that the parts can be removed if you have to repair the boat or just want to change the outfitting. Adhesives that dry hard are just a big pain to repair and they can cause stress cracks i...

Re: Early paddling video

Our paddling crew use to go cross country skiing on Saturdays and drive by the rivers on the way (no river gauges back then). We would then go paddling on Sundays.

Those boats were even before my time, although I did start paddling in the era before helmets.

Re: Gulf Hagas video

I never ran Gulf Hagas in an open canoe but I think that John Connelly has. Not positive though. I've only run it in a 13-foot Hahn (good old days).
