Re: Ok, my turn to ask for OC roll help
Thought you all deserved a follow up. I know I always hate it when someone asks for suggestions and then never comes back to say if they tried any of them... Anyway, I finally got some practice time in yesterday and tried the advice not to let my body go beyond perpendicular when sweeping out. Bam, ...

Re: Gauley Fest Camping
No Gauley Fest for me this year - family commitments getting in the way.
Will have to see if I can free a different weekend up for LG action...

Re: Follow up - OC2 saddle mods for a kid, with photos
Great idea... I'm also in the process of repairing and re-outfitting a Caption, and also want to paddle with my 7 year old son. I assume when paddling with your son you are in the stern position in stead of the centre position... how is the caption trim with a kid on the bow saddle? Does she still ...

Follow up - OC2 saddle mods for a kid, with photos
So it took me a while to get around to taking pictures, but here is what I ended up doing to outfit the front station of my Caption to accommodate my 9 year old son. It's pretty slapdash, made out of random bits of foam, but it works great. My son says it's very comfortable and secure - no more feel...

Re: Tandem River Trippers
XL 13 is a big boat for a solo, but you need way more boat to carry 2 adults plus a long trip's worth of gear. Think 16', not 13 - Dimension, Canyon, Legend, Prospector, Appalachian, etc. For reference, one of the local colleges does a 2 week trip on the Dumoine every summer, and they use Explorers.

Thank you. That helps me visualize things better.dafriend wrote:It looks to me like your arms/hands/paddle position is just fine at the start. You just need to lift the arm/elbow over the far gunwale instead of leaving it tucked up next to your body.

Re: Ok, my turn to ask for OC roll help
Thanks, guys. I'm going to try all of those suggestions. I do notice a LOT of resistance against my knee drive. Almost feels like someone is holding onto the boat, fighting my hip rotation, especially during the second half of the rotation. Perhaps that's caused by sweeping forward too soon. I think...

Ok, my turn to ask for OC roll help
I know there is something fundamentally wrong with my roll technique, because boats that other people claim to be easy to roll (like the L'edge and Option) are nearly impossible for me to roll. I used to have a 100% flatwater and about 60% combat roll in a Mohawk Probe. When I switched to an Outrage...

Re: Help choosing a versatile canoe
Hmmm, I see that my desire to do it all with one boat might be a bit overly-ambitious, so I'm going to change my strategy. I am more interested in going on flatwater trips than I am in paddling whitewater, so I would like a boat with stability and storage space. The ability to handle some light whi...

Re: Help choosing a versatile canoe
As everyone else is saying, such a craft doesn't exist. There is a huge trade off between whitewater and flatwater performance with canoes, more so than with kayaks. Crossover kayaks like the LiquidLogic Remix XP/Stinger XP and whatever the comparable boats from Pyranha, Dagger, etc. are called will...

Re: Pumps
One of my non-paddling friends currently is complaining about a recent pro-am cyclocross race that was won by a guy on a dual suspension mountain bike. For those of you who never heard of the sport, 'cross involves racing an off-road course on road bikes with knobby, but still skinny, tires. The cou...

Re: PFD life?
Take a swim in it. Does it still float you high enough that you are satisfied? Or if you want to be more precise, take 16 lbs of dive weights, attach them to the vest, and see if it sinks. Actually, you'd probably have to do some math to figure out how much more weight than your vest's rated flotati...

Re: New Paddle Suggestions
I tried the edge guard trick on a Bandit and kept getting it caught on rocks. After two flips, I chiseled it off ... so I don't think I'd recommend that personally. We must be using different products. The stuff I use is softish, clear vinyl. It reminds me of the stuff airbag fill tubes are made of...

Re: New Paddle Suggestions
This'll probably meet with the same indifference as the dunnage bags suggestion, since it involves using non-boating gear, but to keep a Bandit blade from wearing down, buy a $2 pack of door edge trim guard from an auto parts store and cut a strip long enough to cover the bottom of the blade and may...
