Re: T-Formex, the next generation of ABS
Encore? That is amazing that you still have one of those, Jim. Sounds like you have worn the Royalex down to where it is "supple like a glove" … I did not know a canoe could survive being turned inside out!

I totally loved your helmet ad and am kicking myself for selling my Seda for $30 a few years ago!...wait, maybe yours used to be mine. Is it baby blue?

Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon
I have not done it...but my friend the legendary Jim Michaud has several times and maybe he will chime in here. I think your instincts are right: longer and faster. Bob Foote designs like Rival or Genesis would work as would many other long boats. I would go with the Outrage.

Re: Any news from ALF?
There was enough water (barely) in the Tellico for Sunday's race. Yesterday trips went on the Nolichucky and Section IV of the Chattooga, which both being larger rivers still have decent flows. Cheoah will be coming alive this weekend for the grande finale of ALF.

Re: Anyone ever open boated the Selway?
I have run it at low water in July about eight years ago (1.8 at Paradise) and I agree with Marc, it would be a completely different experience at high water (just as with the MF Salmon). Exponentially harder and much greater chance of getting snowed on in May. At the level I ran it it was class III...

Re: Baby Falls
I would think it matters less in a longer boat. Well... leaning back in a Spark tends to matter quite a lot. Been there. Done that. Nearly perfect pencil. <proof> http://www.davefriend.com/uploads/babyfallsinspark.jpg No, I meant crunching forward (Cannonballing) to pull the bow up has less effect ...

Re: Baby Falls
Re. Hank's comment: crunching your body FORWARD, this will force you to bring your knees toward your chest, which will force your bow UP! Phil Foti taught me this when I asked him about running vertical drops in a Fly. The shorter the boat, the more this comes into play. If you lean back in a short ...

Blue Ridge (North Carolina) boating during ALF
I and several friends are talking about coming over to ALF for the first weekend. If any canoeists coming down for the festival plan on heading east to the Asheville/Hendersonville/Brevard, NC area during the week or the following weekend, send me a PM here. We have lots of good runs around here in ...
