John- it is all in the genes! Good luck to them.

Fame

I would have rather been famous for faster runs down the river!

Thanks for posting.

Mistaken

Alden:

You are mistaking "old school" with just plain "old". When you can paddle like me just about any course takes 300 seconds!

More on this

Great discussion. I may not be an authority on proper stroke, but I do know a lot about motor learning, that is- how we learn new movements and refine those movements (sometimes referred to as muscle memory). In addition to the many great points made here, please consider: Practice is the MOST power...

Great racers

I concur, THANK YOU to the organizers for a wonderful event and vacation! Also- the picture in Phil’s post needs to be put in perspective. It was taken on Friday evening right after the conclusion of the downriver component of the Combined race. I am in the background, sitting in the water and tryin...

Braggin rights

Oh yeah- the other person with bragging rights is Carolyn Peterson! She had some GREAT runs!

She also had one of those unexpected dumps (on a tandem run) and a nasty swim on Sunday.

GREAT Race

A few observations from the race: The river is great, the water was a good level and the course design was a masterpiece. There was a nice flow to the course, no herky-jerky moves along the way. Well, except for when the river threw a surge at you. Having said that- the course could also punish you....

Responsive Boat

The nice thing about the Spark is that it will do a great job avoiding holes. It is a very responsive and maneuverable boat and it has great hull speed; I enjoy paddling it in Class IV and have not had problems in the holes I have visited.

Go for it

To answer the original question- for me, late June will work, September and the first half of June will not. This is a family event and vacation for us, so we need the kids to be out of school. I will add my 2 cents worth based on the other discussions on this thread. I am new to slalom, just being ...

Find a good ol' boy

I am glad that Jim posted on this one. I am a class 2 boater who has run class 5 rivers. My problem was getting enough courage to enter the rapid in the first place. What I did to overcome the problem was to tell myself “Jim Michaud said I could do it”. When I arrived at the point of no return I wou...
