An acceptable challenge
The one K-1 that I can paddle without shame is a wildwater K-1 Yes, I am a wuss. Years ago I tried a WW C-1. At that time I did a lot of solo "dawn patrol" paddling in mucky-bottomed estuaries. I wasn't sure I could roll it, and I was frankly scared that if anything went wrong and I failed to roll &...

70's "commercial" boats
That was my immediate first take on seeing the pix. White hull, white rim, colored deck, very typical appearance, but of course, a skilled "garage" builder -- of whom there were many -- could have copied the same scheme. Still, I would not take that boat around rocks ;-) My first boat was a '70's Ol...

tracrack
I have a trac rack with a cantelever extension. As a rack the construction & adjustability is great. I can adjust the spread to carry slalom, wildwater, & open boats with proper support & positioning for tie-down lines, and easily pull it off to go thru the car wash. The downside is, in my view you ...

movie
Are you sure you aren't thinking of "Give us a River" ? That was not about the Western boating community, but it did have footage from the 60's or so. (Including one very exciting segment where they showed you "ROLLING". The kayakers rolled. And then they announced "something REALLY special: A C-1 R...

C-skirts
I've made a lot of them. but mostly from the old Walbridge kit/design, which was lousy for K-1's but great for c-1's (hehe). Neo construction is pretty easy -- just make sure you have sharp scissors & fresh glue. I suspect the skirts that Davy has for c-1's would work altho C-1 cockputs, esp older o...

It's an East Coast thing...
C-boating started in the East and has always been primarily an East Coast thing --the State College Boy Scouts were converted from OC's by a European C-1, whereas Euros who went West, like Roger Paris in Colorado, were K-1ers. But, especially since since the advent of plastic ("plastic keeps turkeys...

It's all in the hip action
Carving is great when you are on a nice smooth, roomy wave. When the action picks up & the wave is steep, you're going to have to be alert & quick at edging & spilling. The moment the water starts to pile on the bow, get up on edge & spill. At the same time lean back to bring the boat back higher on...
