Re: tailored PFD
We have 2 Walbridge Hi-Float PFDs hanging up in the garage that I sewed in the late 70s. I also have 2 early low-profile racing PFDs that I sewed in the early 80s (from scratch, not a kit). After "Lifedecks" (with all the required PFD flotation fastened to the inside of your spray skirt between your...

Re: Apartment/condo dwelling Cboaters
It's been quite a few years since I was in a similar situation, but the solution that I used then to store boats was to leave what I was currently paddling on the racks on top of my car. To protect the boat (in this case, a slalom C-2) from UV degradation, I cut-down a plastic tarp to the proper siz...

Re: Covered Canoe 1 man - $200 (Saratoga Springs, NY)
Current owner's impression is that it is the "Little Gem" in that it is the front and back halves of the Gemini C2 with the middle cut out. Looks that way too, actually. Not sure if it was a one-off or not - might be low production (cut the boat down, pull a crude mold, make a few boats...). Yep, i...

The lines aren't right for it to be a Max II. I vote for a Noah.

...and an old school slalom race lay-up was often a 3/4! However, with any composite layup, the devil is in the details. In addition to knowing the number of layers, you also need to know the nature and fabric weight of each layer, along with any additional layup components (e.g. foam core) to judge...

Re: Spark, Ignitor, or Shacho (i.e. which Kaz boat)?
IMHO, Composite boats are much easier to repair than tupperware or royalex boats. A little bit of sandpaper some masking tape, fiberglass or kevlar cloth, and some epoxy and you have everything you need. No plastic welders needed... A composite boat would probably not be the choice for boofing a ro...

Re: Gaybo C2
I've never heard of it before, but the design appears to be an "end-hole" boat from the 60s or very early 70s before center cockpit C-2s began to dominate in WW slalom.

Re: Older Fiberglass Boat
Just keep in mind that it if has been stored outdoors for that long, then UV will undoubtedly have had an effect on the resin, most likely making it brittle and prone to being easily damaged.

Re: Shoulder pain question
There are a lot of ways that you can develop shoulder pain and I'm neither a doctor nor a physical therapist, so I won't venture any opinions as to the cause of your's or what you should do in response to it. However, I will point you toward a preventative exercise routine designed to strengthen the...

Nice looking boat, watermite!
We sold our Torrent a few years ago, but still paddle the TorrentXL that we built in '84.

Re: Saddle mods for a kid?
One thing I've done to modify adult outfitting for kids is to add new center hull anchors for the thigh straps that are closer to the seat (i.e. a few inches closer to the stern than the adult-sized strap anchors. If your strap adjustment is sufficiently flexible, this allows you to tighten up the s...

Re: open and closed designs...history?
There is only pain if I'm not paddling often enough. This point is easily forgotten. For a variety of reasons, I wasn't able to get out paddling this spring until just recently, when the girls were briefly home from college and wanted to catch a quick river trip. I took my OC-1 because its higher s...

Re: any c-2's for sale out there?
I would say early 70s vintage rather than 80s. Center-cockpit C-2s had already come on strong in the mid-70s with the Gemini series. Late 70s into the early 80s the Paramax & ParamaxII were the dominant C-2s. By the 83' race season newer C-2s like the Torrent (followed by the TorrentXL in '84), the ...

Re: open and closed designs...history?
I started out in open canoes (mainly wilderness tripping, but also some whitewater back in the Grumman era), moved to kayak, then to C-2, then C-1, and most recently I've been paddling more OC-1 because my legs don't last very long in a low kneel anymore. I like them all, they are each different and...
